My MC16 into something that might go well eventually..

Fri Jun 26, 2009 7:22 pm » Post: #1 » Download Post

Bought this pretty cheap to be honest, but the back pot had typically seized.. think some smack head had owned it last so probably didnt use decent oil!

first day home..

I bought some mc18 barrels, pistons, carbs etc to replace the shagged mc16 items, found some tyres and got it to the mot station..

After bribing the tester it got a valid mot, so went for a run.

Fairly impressed, lots of room for improvement though! New brakes for starters so I bought a set of armstrong sintered pads and fitted them. Once they had bedded into the grooved disks the braking was a lot better and I started having fun on it.

Lovely....

After a scare with the old tyres I'd fitted I bought some bt45's and they did the handling a world of good! I also fitted some tyga cans to the standard pipes which freed the engine up somewhat!

I then fitted a cbr929 rear shock, which made the back end pretty bloody good to be honest, I fiddled with the front and got that somehwere near useable so she was not handling as well as stopping and going!

I had a trackday booked, that I was planning on using the rgv for, but due to not getting the heads back in time I had to use the little nsr for this task. I had worries about using it as its a pretty unknown quantity as to the crank life but what the hell.. if it went bang I'd use the nc30!

Well.. what a suprise, it went very well on track, struggling for power up the back straight at anglesey but where the diesels were passing me on the straight I was flying past them on the brakes! Even with bt45's the bike was really behaving well, inspiring lots of confidence!

Well that was it.. I was sure I could make it into a decent forgotten era racer for next year, maybe not fast enough to pass the leading reverse cylinder tz's but could certainly give them some hassle!

So I start getting a few ideas together, first thing is to bin the standard pipes. martin77 kindly made me a set for it, in kit form to save travelling down south to have them fitted..

But no fit with the standard swingarm so a '21 item was sourced (cheers ricey3) and I started fitting it the other day...

CBR929 shock

But the ride height is mental now due to the swingarm-linkage bracket being too high

Bum, but I'm sure I'll get round it somehow!

I'll post updates as and when I get the chance to work on it.. hoping for 65hp but a nice strong midrange!

Paul

Amazingly, I have managed to find some time to do some work to it!

I have, in the meantime, been collection parts. These include;
MC21 Magteks with disks
MC21 Calipers
RS250 Bodywork
MC18 Clocks
MC18 PGM-II and loom

Plus a few other bits and bobs!

Anyway, todays task was to get the front end on. The forks are mc18 items.

The old mc16 front end

Forks and old stuff off

mc18 yokes fitted. Not a bad fit really

Still some work to do, need to get a new set of taper rollers. On the shopping list for next week or tomorrows stafford show Cool

Forks and bar mounts on

Nice new alloy bars fitted. Handy to have as spares for when the inevitable happens! Cheap too, off a well known auction site Laughing

Wheel in... mmm sexy!

Next up will be tackling the rear end, fitting the mc21 swingarm has presented me with a few problems as regard to the linkage setup.. I'm going to have to just experiment with different linkage and spring combo's until I get it right. I could, at a push modify the swingarm, as I really need to use the '21 one to get the pipes tucked in! Still, so long as its made of metal I can bodg..err modify it !

Good luck with it mate. Looks like your doing a great job on it.

Is that your house/shed ? There seems to be a shat load of other bikes and cool stuff in the background.
Is there half a ducati sitting on the floor in the first shot (yellow bike) ?

Alright mate, yes its my shed out the back of the house. Built it last year, would have been lost without one!

The yellow thing is a blata copy, watercooled thing. Revs like buggery and goes like stink but so unreliable!

The garage gets full of stuff pretty quick!!

Right well not much progress really, been quite busy sorting a few other bikes. Getting all the bits together to sell the rgv, anyone want to buy one? Wink And as usual sorting everyone elses bikes out!

Progress is, well I have been thinking more about the swingarm fitment, I'm possibly going to cut the linkage mounting off the '21 swingarm, machine both faces flat and weld in an extension to bring it into the same dimensions as the mc16 item. But first I'm going to knock some plates up that will allow me to fit it as is, you never know, it might just work! It will be handy to have the ratios for that swingarm just in case they are needed in the future. Someone might need them.. maybe!

Collected a few more parts, got the pgmII and loom to fit, not 100% sure if it will work with the mc16 stator but nothing impossible to sort out if it doesnt!
Got a set of wets on wheels too, typically, I used an 18" rear as I was struggling to find an mc21 rear.. then a week later I win an mc21 rear wheel for next to nothing on fleabay. Oh well.. might sell the 18" rear with a wet tyre and use the '21 item. See what happens!

This weeks task has been to get the engine out for some tuning work, as everyone knows the mc16 cases are very restrictive, and comparing them to the mc18 cases I have confirms a few physical differences. Also the barrels are having a makeover too, try and eek a few more ponies out of the bugger...

Some pictures of the slow progress...

getting the engine out..

Quite a peach of a lump really, easy to strip the whole engine down with it in situ. Makes lifting out so much easier. I am starting to see the difference between the nsr engines and the rgv's..

L/H crank seal been leaking by the looks of things..

Big end about to fail I wonder? Look at the difference in rollers between this one

and this one

I have a spare luckily.... Embarassed

And of course cleaning the parts, nothing pisses a tuner off better than sending them shite encrusted parts.. Laughing

Until next time... Hopefully now winter is here the jobs will drop off enabling me to get more done !

Bit of an update, had a bit of time to myself so got a couple of jobs done.

The biggest headache I faced was fitting the mc21 swingarm due to the linkage mounting point being higher than the mc16 item. There were 2 available options to me, either making new linkage plates or modifying the swingarm and moving the linkage point. Now the latter would have been the best way, but also the hardest. The former was running the risk of destroying the shock absorbers action and spoiling the suspension setup.

BUT.. before comitting to chopping the swingarm up I thought I'd just try going down the plates route, just to see how the back end would behave. Doesnt make sense to try the hardest route first does it?

So I got some gash alloy plate, did a few measurements and got the hacksaw out;

Lo and behold it worked ok, I even had to back the shock off (fireblade item) from its max hardest setting as it was too stiff with the new setup. Ideal, it now gives me more room to play with the shock settings as it was a bit soft when on the standard bike. The action feels ok, but the proof will be in the pudding as they say..

I'll get some proper plates made up now!

Apart from that, I've put the new subframe on, fitted with a little bit of modifying;

Chance to fit the rear wheel now too, looking better already!

I found a crack in the frame, on the front down spar. Lucky I spotted it and its made me think it could be worth getting the whole thing X-rayed in ndt at work. Not sure what caused it so would be worth checking the rest of the bike out.

Another job was to modify the lock stops as with the mc18 yokes there was bugger all lock!

Then a trial run with the tank and seat unit..

Thats all for now...

As the MC16 motor is solid mounted, the frame's always susceptible to cracking. My HRC frame is gusseted and plated there, so it was obviously a known problem.

A small update...

After the weather "chaos" my engine got stuck in parcelforce world for a few days, having been nicely flowed and ported by a very nice man indeed! A call to tyga (wonderful people) got me a very comprehensive top end rebuild kit at a price I'm still suprised at, even with the postage!

So after a failed start this morning (heater ran out of gas) I finally got on with the job of putting the motor together.

Crank in..

Pistons in their place

And the rear cylinder fitted

I would have got more done but I took the time to remove the rc valves and clean behind them, plus cleaning up the gasket surfaces took a while.

Should have the engine completely built by the end of the week (time permitting... as usual) and the frame is going away for a small weld, after that happy days, get the engine in, pipes fitted and welded and we are making progress!!

First test day is 20th march at Anglesey... the clock is ticking! Laughing

Had a bit of time when I got home from work and seeing as I'm on the wagon thought I'd spend some time in the shed building the engine..

Not got very far, learning about this engine so not worrying about backtracking when I make mistakes!

Both barrels fitted, left the heads off as I couldnt remember which way round they went! Need a manual...

Gearbox in, reed cages and rubbers in but will probably have to come out again.. Also experimenting with a different flash method, think its better..

Also fitted the rustiest ever altenator, might ditch it and go to total loss but dunno yet, did it with the rgv and it did shed a load of weight but meant having to charge the battery. I'll have a think, it also depends what size battery I fit

Over and out..

Bit more fun this morning, engine is pretty much done now so I'm just waiting on the frame to be welded and the motor to come back for my lathe and I can pretty much do everything else..
