So I'm looking to graft the damping adjustable NC30 internals and inner tubes onto the MC18 lowers. Speaking with my suspension guy (that I use for my Ducati's), we're trying to get a plan of attack to sort out the NSR's suspension (I'm about 110kg). He's thinking the stock MC1 forks are damping rod and the NC30 units are cartridge. Is that the case? If so, he can build a custom shim stack and valving for me (to go with a serious re-springing, of course).
Yes, the mc18 (non-sp) forks are the old fashioned damper-rod type, and the later nc30 forks have cartridges in them. I've fitted some to my nsr. The Damper rod type stanchions will not work with the cartridges though due to the shuttle in the end being too narrow, so you'll have to use the nc30 stanchions which are AFAIK 9mm shorter than the NSR ones.
Hope this helps. _________________ More **** two strokes than you can shake a **** stick at.

Yeah, pretty much confirmed what I had heard and inferred. That's good news though--My Ohlins guy will be able to build up a completely custom valve/shim stack for that cartridge.
Re: length, I'll have to make sure the forks sit as low as possible in the triples then.
If the NC30 stanchions are indeed 9mm shorter than the NSR, then that's almost perfect for everyday road use. Pulling standard forks 10mm up through the yokes (triples) really plants the front-end. The MC18 needs this even more than any other model, as the standard geometry is rather lazy.
My advice would be to also fit some HRC shock link plates to the rear, which will raise the ride height by approximately 50mm. (That's 1" to you guys!) _________________ Andy.

OK, that sure is approximate.
Although, just thinking about that,..
If you took the average weight of your motorcycle rider in the US vs the UK, in to account,.. then maybe,
In the US you would gain about 1 inch of ride height
In the UK you would gain about 50mm of ride height
with the rider in-situ.
Perhaps this is what Andy was implying?
[sorry Andy, not trying to put words in your mouth, just couldn't resist a bit of cheekyness towards our friends in the US.] _________________ [color=#808080][size=9]Yes,.. I too know how to waste Time and Money,...
For the rear, it's looking more like there will be an Ohlins with about 5mm more length anyway. I don't see any HRC F3's and after a rebuild and respring, the SP shocks I see arent much cheaper than the gold and blue stuff.

Are the bump stop/shuttles in the NC30 stanchions the same as the NSR ones? That floating ring thing.
I've built up my '91RS forks with NSR stanchions and would prefer to change to slightly shorter stanchions.
Not that it's really relevant, but I just grafted a set of MC21 SE forks onto an NC30 track bike (don't ask).
I didn't measure them though as everything seemed to fit (except the brake disks), but if the NSR fork are longer I'll need
to drop them through the yokes a bit to keep the handling the same.
Anyone happen to know now much? i.e. does anyone know the difference in length between late type NC30 forks and MC21 SE forks?
I can't measure my NC30 ones as they're away getting the damper bolts drilled out and I have a track day in 2 days.
I measured some NC30 forks last night. Overall length from fork slider bottom to top of stanchion cap bolt came to 717mm. This measurement is minus the cap bolt nut part and of course the preload adjuster.
I can't remember the 21 fork length. I can look tonight after work.
