My MC21 program

Tue Oct 14, 2008 7:41 am » Post: #1 » Download Post

So thought i'd add to this little section.

This is my first 250 and first two stroke. When i moved here i was discussing which bike to buy with a friend (a bike obsessive) and he recommended i got a NSR, i think every conversation had a "have you got one yet?" line.

Am a happy amateur mechanic when i need to be but have sod all space here.

Here's the current situation: bought for HK$16000 (approx 1000GBP, fairly standard price here in HK), the original PGM died within a month (oh oh not a good sign) had that replaced under guarantee (replaced with a 2nd hand one). 2 weeks later someone scuffed the bodywork with their bumper (nice considerate drivers here!). then recently one of the exhaust cans died on me.

The plan:

Clean it (very bad habit of not cleaning things regularly, if at all)
Top end rebuild (didn't do one after i bought it)
Thorough check of electrics
New exhausts
Basic performance tweaks (a fun road bike, not race bike)
New body work (open to paint scheme suggestions)

Great to see you in here already Alex. Thank you for becoming a Titanium member.

Unusual take on the Repsol paint! Wink

Take the seat off and see if the orange/blue wiresplice has been done. This (with a couple 20mm holes in the airbox lid) and possibly a slight rejet should bump you up from 45hp to about 60hp. If done properly, it may be a bit difficult to see the wiresplice, so you may need to peel back some of the tape on the harness.

If it killed a PGM, and are already considering it anyway, then a top-end service would be a very wise move indeed, as the PGM's often fail because of sticky RC Valves or tight actuator cables. Any strain on the RC Servo will excessively load the RC controller circuitry and quickly fry it.

when I say it killed the PGM what i should say is the garage mechanic said "the pgm died" but with hindsight and after reading a bit on hear i'm not entirely sure if that would have been the case. But that won't stop the rebuild! Bring on the grease! and disgruntled girlfriend Exclamation Exclamation

Laughing

I think a previous owner liked Tango! and Repsol logos.

Took most the fairing off today and had a little peak at the PGM wiring!! hmmm, the previous owner was no electrician. Fortunately i've done a fair bit or re-wiring on an old car so this should be an easy fix.

Click on a pic to go to flickr where you can see the original size photo's

next up - clean the engine, drain it and bring it inside.

Today,

Drained the transmission and coolant.

Coolant was fine as i'd flushed that a few months back but the transmission fluid was a lovely dark brown/black colour, not looking very clean.

Took off the radiator, and coolant pipes. went to take the exhaust off but nearly rounded one of the bolts, will need to get some better tools to continue the dismantling.

Question for any readers - is it worth getting the samco hose kit, or giving the old hoses a thorough clean?

Pic so far:

I've only personally ever seen one hose fail, and that was from the front wheel touching it under braking! (It was a DIY hose for HRC head conversion and no V-piece fitted at the time.)

No harm in fitting Samco hoses, but I can't see any benefit over good condition stock hoses myself. I can understand it on turbo induction systems, where high pressures are involved, but anything else is just an exercise in aesthetics I reckon. £70 is better spent on the dyno!

Splice has now been re-wired and soldered properly, heat shrink wrapped and fully taped up, nice and cosy.

Honda NSR

Honda NSR

I also took the opportunity to rewire the gearing so i'll get that little bit extra in the the top 3. Wasn't my tidiest job but it's definitely solid. As the 3rd wasn't cut i had to cut and wrap the heat shrink to make it more secure. Looks a bit dodge, but isn't going anywhere. now. Anyway that's all wrapped and back in place.

Honda NSR

I think i'll need to start with the actual dirty work now.

Hey Alex, spot on with the thumbnails (I much prefer thumbnail pictures to text links in instances such as this!), but do you think you can add target="_blank" to the link please, so clicking on them doesn't take you away from the Forum, but opens a new page for the picture instead?

If you edit your post, you will see I've modified the link for the last picture to show what I mean.

Cheers,

Sorry about that, I usually do add the target to everything, but seem to have been a bit lazy with these ones so far. I'll go through and change them.

Thanks

Don't worry abour changing the ones already posted. It was just to ask if you could try and remember in future.

I normally click with the mouse wheel which opens/closes tabs in Firefox, but some people will just click and navigate away from the site. I am so used to clicking into a new tab and then closing it, that the odd time I do left-click a link I automatically close the window when I've finished with it... last time it was your picture and I therefore had to re-open the Forum! Smile

I only saw fit to mention it because you do take the time to post decent photos and thumbnail links, so had a feeling I would be asking something of someone who would appreciate where I was coming from.

We can be an anal lot, us NSR owners! Laughing

Sounds like we'd get on well! Fontyyy and I should come to HK for a couple days next time we're in Asia! I'm not a city person, but I love HK even if it's just for the skyline at night from Kowloon! Spectacular!

Well the bike's been collecting dust as life changed a lot around the winter and it's now being pieced back together as I'm likely moving to Toronto (with the bike). here's where i'm up to with putting bit back together:

I'm piecing it back together so I can ship it in 1 piece and then in Canada strip it and clean it properly over the winter, seeing as it'll be unrideable outside anyway Smile

While it's been in pieces, i've been getting a bit confused about this bike. I'll post some of the identifying marks soon and see if anyone can help place whether it's and R, SP or mish/mash - I suspect the latter.

Putting on the body work:

Modified the existing exhaust to fit Tyga cans (while I save for some new pipes):

all pipes are back on here:

Hey just a word of caution....it may be easier to get it into canada in a bunch of pieces rather than a complete bike. Transport canada gets rather anal about imports, especially bikes that were not sold there. Check out the ir webpage first.
