headlight globe

Fri Oct 14, 2005 2:10 pm » Post: #1 » Download Post

i bought a new globe for the headlights today..
but it doesnt fit...it has 3 bits coming out around the edges, but they just dont line up with the gaps to go in place...it looks like the previous owner snapped one of the pieces off to make it fit....

is there a specific globe i need?

cheers

I presume a "globe" is a bulb?

Anyway I'm not sure about Aus but in the UK the bulb size required for NSR's is very similar to a size called H4 thats used by lots of cars. Plenty of people just use these instead and bend/cut the pins to "fit"

The problem is that Jap homemarket bikes expect 35w on low beam and these H4 bulbs are 55w, hence regulator rectifiers die and (on the grey Honda 400's for definate) the main beam light switch melts as the power is passed through the switch itself not a relay (which was fitted to UK VFR400s as standard).

Dave Silver Spares sell the real Honda 35w/60w bulbs in the UK for £5 each (genuine spares, RVF400).
Can't help for Aus sorry.

hmm...

yeha i have bought a H4 globe and installed it. 12V 60/55W.
i just bought this one as i assumed the previous bulb in there was the correct one..guess not.. Sad

so the regulator rectifier is dead? shite...

what do i need to do? is it costly to fix?

thanks.

No, it may be fine, for ages, or forever. Or the reg/rec may have been replaced with a new (better) one.

250's don't seem to have that many problems with electrics, the NC23/29/30/35 are renound for it, it's about the only thing that goes wrong with them. It's just something to be aware of, my '28 has been "wrong" since I got it, so was my NC35.

Obviously it (the reg/rec) can handle a 55w drain from the lights, it can handle a 60w from the main and a 95w from a mainbeam flash (35+60 note:- when you flash the main lights up as well, unlike when you switch) so it must be able to, wheather it can handle it all the time or can handle the 115w draw from a flash on an H4 bulb is another matter. Also the 400's run twin headlights so the "problem" is doubled, this is probably why NSRs don't fry the mainbeam switch yet both of my RVF's and my CBR4 all did.

Thinking about it I don't think the will NSR's do it, 1/2 the power, same switch, see? What happens is one day you press main beam on and when you change back the button has got that hot that it's melted a bit, the low beam circuit doesn't connect anymore and it all goes black, so you hit mainbeam again, ride home blinding everyone and take the switch to bits and clean it up.

I think in the USA a Honda VFR uses a different bulb then standard H4, were the pins are located different. They may fit a NSR ?

i had a look inside the switch unit and all seems ok...everyhting is connected/soldered. there does seem to be a li bit of melted black stuff but i cleaned it and all looks good.

by the way...when i use the switch to turn the low beam on, the instruments still light up fine, so the actual switch is ok?

Stick a voltmeter into the bulb connector, and see if there's 12v there. Shuld be on one connector at high beam, and the other at low beam. The third connector is the earth.
