New Project, New to NSR's, New to the Forum

Sun Apr 25, 2010 10:37 am » Post: #1 » Download Post

Hi everyone,
Hope this goes well! I picked up an NSR MC18 today, and wanted to share her with everyone. I will be fixing her up and I am looking to members for ideas and insperation. (And advice!)

Apparently she used to run about 6 months ago, when the carbies started to play up. She still ran hard when "on the pipe" but strugled down low. The carbies were pulled out and fiddled with and some white gunk discovered in them. This prompted the owners to try to rebuild her, but the task became all to hard, and she has sat for the last 6 months in pieces with the carbies out.

So I am the proud new owner and ready to take on the challange of fixing and owning a bike I have wanted for ever!

The good bits:
- Everything appears to be stock
- Everything seems to be just a little dusty and dirty.
- Brakes and clutch work. Front break disks were replaced.
- Nice clean 2 stroke oil in the oil tank.
- I'm keen and excited

The bad bits:
- The petrol tank is not good. All the fittings have been removed and the lock and filler are siezed.
- All the locks are stiff and I can't turn the ignition yet.
- It has been sitting for 6 months with no carbs on it, just some rags stuffed into the intake tracts
- One of the high tension leads came apart in my hand when I went to pull a plug out
- It has done 28,000 ks and no one knows if it has ever been opened up.
- Its dirty and dusty
- Its an MC18 and parts are getting harder to find.

It looks mostly ok to me, and I am keen to get it back to gether so as to gain a base point from where to go to next. I need to clean the carbies well and give everything a once over.
I will also be ordering a manual to work out where all the hoses around the carby go!

A few questions:
- Is there a way of testing whether the oil pump is working without running the bike?
- In the attached photos, are the guages supposed to point down on such an angle? From looking at how they are bolted on and at other NSRs the answer seems to be yes.
- Any advice on starting a bike that has sat for 6 months? I will replace the coolant that has been drained, (I hope, there is none visible!) before I start.

Anyway, here are the pics.

- I'm not sure on the oil pump test - easiest thing to do is run 30:1 premix with good synthetic oil with the lines to the carbs disconnected and check it after you do get it running.

- The gauges do look a little low - maybe the front piece that they sit on and the fairing bolts to is bent forward?

- I wouldn't worry about it sitting 6 months. All of my bikes sit nearly that long every winter.

My advice - don't try to do everything at once. Get the carbs rebuilt and put it back together with what you have. If it runs ok, then work on one thing at at time so you can always have it back together easily and see constant progress. That will keep you motivated and also have the bike coming along pretty well. A lot of guys will bring a bike home and get excited about doing it all, then break it apart into a million pieces and lose interest or get completely lost. If you can get those carbs rebuilt in a week or so after the parts arrive, you'll love playing with the bike and can't wait to fix the next thing.

Enjoy!
Craig

**Edit - I just remembered that the manuals have just been released in English and are available on the forum (look in the stickies at the top). Keep forgetting to order mine too!

Thanks for the advice. Yeah, its hard not to rip into it straight away. I am going riding this morning so I don't bury myself in parts and WD 40!

The best thing about any new project, is if you can get is complete! At least everything is there, and you can refurb or replace whatever you want as and when.

Good luck with the restoration, and welcome to NSR-WORLD.

Indeed. You also have one of the best model NSR's to go at too.

Did a full day in the shed today.
Last week picked up a second MC18. This one is a runner! So, had to take it for a little test ride...............wow!!!!! I am HOOKED! First ride on a two stroke road bike, WOW! Its not running right, pulls hard through the mid-range, but seems to be a little short up top. It hasn't had the wire splice done, or any modification, and, WOW!!! So now the go is to get one regestered, and one as a track bike. Now I have to start hunting around for a set of farings, or save and buy a tyga set. Also lots of little bits and pieces, some of which are coming. So its going to be a busy winter.

This is the new bike.

Moriwaki silencers (not really!), any good?

Its ratty

And filthy dirty

But it goes!

So then got stuck into cleaning and pulling apart the other bikes carbs, as the previous owner said that was where the problem lay. Yeah, the problems begin when peole sikaflex float bowls on, and then wonder why their bikes don't run well!

Carbs don't look good!

Anyway, soaked it in acetone, got all the gooey gunk out, cleaned everything and put it back together. The beauty of having a second bike.....instruction manual in 3D!
Put carbs and airbox and tank on the first bike, fuel and oil, fuel tap leaks! Well, the long and short of it, I wanted to get it running today but as the ignition switch is dodgy, the coils unknown, and the day almost gone, it will have to wait for next weekend to see if it will go. I didn't get around to checking the spark, so will have a day of fault diagnosing next sunday.
But got to ride an NSR for the first time!!!! Am still on a high!
WOW!

Dude, with that bike you're now an official member of the Toecutter's gang! I'd leave it that way cause all black is cool and you're sure to scare old ladies and kids....

2 NSRs already is not a surprise. They bring their friends home and sometimes reproduce right there in the garage. Have fun!

It looks like the paint was applied by a professional? Damn? There are times when you really should not play in the garage after putting the bong down Wink

Ha ha yeah, true! Its going to take a bit of sanding and prep work to get it looking neat and clean again. Thinking something simple, red/white combo with a few stickers here and there.

So true. Pvan you are starting exactly as I did with my R2J and now I already have 3 MC18s. Having one that runs really helps. Good luck and be strong. Laughing

Patience is key.

Well, another few hours in the garage this weekend, progress is being made. Got the first bike running today and I am really happy, as this was the unknown. She seems to be ok, which is great.

Short video. (Sorry about the crappy mobile phone quality!)

So, I needed to find out why it wouldn't produce spark. Answer was the dodgy ignition switch. Pulled it off and "hotwired" the the bike. Got spark in no.1 cylinder, nothing in number two. Swapped over the coil from the other bike, bingo! Sparks a plenty.

Next, put the oririnal carbs that I had given a quick clean the week before back on. No dice. Float bowls still leaking and no fuel getting to the cylinders. Love 2 strokes no fuel, no spark no go.

Swapped the carbs from the running bike, 3 kicks later, she's running! Stoked! A few issues though:
- seems to be really oily, so running rich, or the oil pump is out of whack (i'm guessing here!)
- Needs a tune
- Needs the gearbox oil changed
- Needs a new ignition switch (which is coming)
- The turn idiot light flashes with the revs (see vid) so there is a short their somewhere.

Parts are on their way. (I hope!) Another set of carbs, switches, coil packs, ignition, carb gasket sets and some bits and pieces here and there. Will be starting to paint next weekend and chase all the electrical areas ready for rego.

Once this bike is sorted as the street bike, I can hunt parts at leasure to turn the other bike into my trackday only special. This will require another set of farings, but they are out there! Was thinking of painting it malboro colours, like the way that looks. Ahh the joy of bikes!

Well, after a few weeks of activity in the shed, Success! Bike was roadworthied and regestered today! So that is goal one down, and I can now concentrate on hunting the parts I need to build my track only bike. Got a few problems to overcome, the main one being all the parts I've pinched off one bike to get the other going. Things like rear brake calipers, footpegs, and other misc bolts and nuts.

Also I need a complete fairing! I am thinking about making my own out of fiberglass, but as I am getting married on October, that has to take priority, to keep the peace! So it will be list making for the time being, and stripping the track bike right down to get rid of all the unnessesary bits and pieces and cleaning everything right up. Fun times ahead!

There is still a bit of finishing to be done and all the usuall tunings to sort out, but it is much easier now that everything is legal. It rides great, handles wonderfully and runs............ wellish! Fun fun times!

P.S excuse the modified rear seat, the proper one is back on. Needed it in place for single seat rego discount.

Looking good fella, as for fairings check out a topic in the main discussion forum about a company called WEBIKE i think its called, they do what looks to be some very decent fibreglass fairings and complete 1 piece seat units for NSR's.

Wish i had 2 NSR's to play with, i too was bitten by the 2 stroke bug a while back and im now seriously considering selling my RVF to fund a MC21 trackbike.

Keep the updates coming, MC18's are cool Very Happy
