NSR registration/VIN# in US Question

Sat Jul 21, 2007 1:07 am » Post: #1 » Download Post

I talked to a guy who might want to sell his NSR. He said the pike is titled/registered in the US BUT he pulled a VIN# sticker off a TD250 ( think that is what he said) and put it on the NSR so the bike is registered as a different bike. Sounds very sketchy. Any thoughts to is this worth the effort?

How is the VIN on an NSR attached to the bike?...a sticker, riveted plate or something else?

All the NSRs that I have seen have the VIN riveted on. Is the bike currently titled in CA? As for price with the different VIN, hard to say without knowing the yr,spec and etc about the bike.

The VIN on all genuine NSR's is stamped into the right hand side of the headstock.

Nope, the VIN is stamped (i.e. non-removable) on the headstock.

The VIN number on an RS (a real one... not an Aprilia!) is on a plate riveted to the side of the frame, but not an NSR.

Frame number should be here:

Of course, it should start KV3. Wink

This is not sketchy, It is very hard to get the 11 didgit VIN to go through most DMV's(17 is normal).... So this owner went another route. Get a busted up frame with a title, put the VIN plate on the NSR, and there you have it, a titled NSR that the state thinks is a TDR250, an american purpose machine.

All I have to say about it is that if it were titled as an NSR, it still be 11 didgit, and in my eyes, worth more money... Some don't care, but I do.

If that's not sketchy, I don't know what is!! Unless of course sketchy means something totally different in the US to what it means in the UK?!

Well, what I'm saying here is, that owner had no other way to get the bike legal on the road here in the US. This is no reason to not buy the bike.
I have seen several NSR's for sale that were titled like that....

Not sketchy.... NOT correct, but all your state will know is that you have a TD250, and that's it.

Playing Devil's Advocate for a moment and taking the moral high ground...

If your NSR is registered as something else, say a 1988 TDR250 just as an example, what would happen if (perish the thought) you were to be involved in an accident and killed a child... what would the insurance do? How would the family fair?

Both the titled(DMV) and insurance will be titled as 1988 TDR250. This will not have any effect on the insruance liability.

I completely understand where you are coming from Andy.

But, not to drag this out.... To anyone concerned, that bike IS a TDR250... If something terrible were to happen, I think it'd be no different than if you were on a CBR or an R6. You are the idiot driver, has nothing to do with the machine.

If I were looking for a bike, I would not be affraid to buy it.

Are you telling me that the insurance company and/or police won't do EVERYTHING in their power to investigate that all is in order, so that the insurance company is confident it is liable to pay out?

That's a great insurance system you guys have! Maybe it works differently in the States, but it's fraud in the UK, and you will quite possibly go to jail for it... especially if you kill someone on the road with invalid documents.

Over here the insurance company will do everything in it's power NOT to pay out on a claim if possible. You must be fully legal, and that includes registration documents. You will likely get away with a different engine number in the frame, but even that could cause the insurance company to default.

Like I say, I am only trying to point out the possible consequences of lying to the DMV and/or insurance company. I don't think it is right though to tell people that it's OK, especially without offering the advise that it may be ilegal.

But it's NOT a TDR, is it? It's not even a Yamaha... hell, Martin77's "NSR-D" isn't even a Yamaha, and that has a YPVS motor in it!

It's not a case of "dragging this out", it's case of making the prospective buyer aware of what they could be getting themselves into.

What happens if the CHP guy that pulls you over one day follows a bit of racing, and knows what a Honda looks like? Let's face it, many of us are pretty geeky when it comes to bikes... I can spot many tell-tale signs regarding make of motorcycle, so who's to say he can't too? Sad to say, but I could tell you the difference between a Kawasaki ZXR 3-spoke and a Suzuki GSX-R 3-spoke, and I've never owned either bike!

There are plenty (well, maybe not plenty!) of properly registered NSR's in CA. It's up to the original poster to make an informed decision based on the available information.

I agree with you.

But here, it's been done - it's being done - and will continue to be done.
In this situation, you are registering a VIN plate-insuring a VIN plate, then you bolt the NSR to the VIN plate..... You are riding a VIN plate with wheels.
