But it's NOT a TDR, is it? It's not even a Yamaha... hell, Martin77's "NSR-D" isn't even a Yamaha, and that has a YPVS motor in it!

It's not a case of "dragging this out", it's case of making the prospective buyer aware of what they could be getting themselves into.

What happens if the CHP guy that pulls you over one day follows a bit of racing, and knows what a Honda looks like? Let's face it, many of us are pretty geeky when it comes to bikes... I can spot many tell-tale signs regarding make of motorcycle, so who's to say he can't too? Sad to say, but I could tell you the difference between a Kawasaki ZXR 3-spoke and a Suzuki GSX-R 3-spoke, and I've never owned either bike!

There are plenty (well, maybe not plenty!) of properly registered NSR's in CA. It's up to the original poster to make an informed decision based on the available information.
