Honda are definitely proud of the NSR250R, despite them apparently hating 2-strokes, according to many of the Lemmings out there! There's always an NSR250R, usually and MC16 or MC18 on display in the Collection Hall, and always displayed alongside the most exotic of company!

MIght have a bone to pick with you about that rear brake line! 🤣🤣🤣

Update

Tue Jun 27, 2023 1:13 pm » Post: #184 » Download Post

Long overdue update - Still needs a legal plate and a MOT but given its was nice weather I thought I’d take a few pics for posterity.

Other than that it’s getting close to completion - next on the list is decals including the Rothmans logo on the screen, I alao have an earlier single seat conversion with the iconic Shark gills but that needs painting and some light restoration work.

Anyway for now it looks like this….

I think you’ll agree - Quite a difference between page 1 and now, also an equal difference with my bank balance between then and now Laughing

It looks well and you did a cracking job with the paintwork, as for the number plate , I wouldn’t worry all mine are that size and I’ve never had a problem with mots or the rozzers.

Some MOT stations insist on standard numbers plates and a reflector, because they can be fined

Cheers Zeus, it’s been one hell of a marathon to get this far but loved every minute
The guy who MOT’ed my ZXR H1 failed it before I had chance to turn the engine off due the number plate … Thank god I was only swinging by to book it in (he’s a top guy but think he’s had his collar felt)

Agreed - it’s an easy fix for me, even if the plate and reflector only gets used for 20 minutes once a year

In comparison the regulation number plate is so big it looks more like a 24’ Pizza box has been stuck on the ar5e end …..

Cracking job Nick, looks stunning, but i still think for that authentic racer look it needs a pair of tasteful rearsets, imo only though.

Hi Les thanks for your kind comments, theres still areas I want to tinker with and refine -rearsets would certainly make it more racy - as would and fitting R5K fairing for a leaner slicker looking appearance, but it’s knowing when and where to draw the line and stop.

Kinda pushed the boundaries by binning the lights, front indicators, mirrors, rear subframe and fitting up swept pipes😅. However I’ve saved all the original parts and can easily undo everything.
In fact I’ve now got three back ends, two sets of side fairings and four top cowls 🤦‍♂️

I think you went for the right option regarding lights mirrors etc, especially if she's not a daily rider, but it does get kinda addictive dont it.

With summer sadly behind us and little sign of progress from me regarding getting this back on the road…. I have to fess up its not due to being unduly slack, but more the case of right royally f**king up and seeking the assistance of the omni present NSR Guru located at GT performance in Plymouth “Saint Steve Alee” to get me back on track.

Following the rebuild the engine sat idle for so long and unbeknown to me the new clutch plates had fused together and having had the engine running many times in the past it wasn’t until I went to put it in gear that the problem was identified and even with the clutch lever fully pulled in the drive to the back wheel was still fully engaged. Rooky error 101!

Steve gave me two options – ship the bike to GT Performance for him to strip down and manually tease the clutch plates apart, brilliant offer but would involve a 300+ mile round trip, or fire up the engine, warm the oil up, switch off and cable tie the clutch lever in and periodically rotate the back wheel to see if the lock could be broken ………I chose the latter and after six weeks it finally yielded and even then for the first few days it wasn’t a happy bunny going into first with a good “Clunk”

Now back in business once more - it was MOT time and after a lot of discussion and push back from various local MOT stations about presenting my bike without lights and at one place being told I’d even have to remove the switch gear as well – I conceded (for the time being at least) to toe the line and reinstate the lights etc and ditch the faux pipes. In doing so the front and rear bodywork has been removed and replaced with the originals and for good measure its also sporting a big ass number plate the same dimensions of an extra-large Domino’s Pizza box – oh and orange rather than black lensed indicators are present once more.

My only concession is I’ve not fitted the NOS mirrors as I can’t bring myself to fit them, however that’s probably going to change if I can’t easily see what’s going on behind me and then were pretty much back to OEM standard before all my nonsense started.

So for the time being my goal of having a faux version of this has been sidelined.

Now looking rather standard – but never the less still a looker for an old 1980’s girl

One rear panel is still awaiting HRC decal and Rothmans lettering so paintwork is looking very flat at present without the clear coat.

Quietly awaiting collection…

As I was no longer going to push the bike to a local MOT station - Gas Junky Motorcycles in Cheltenham kindly drove over and collected it, after a good look over from Mike who also set up the suspension for my 70kg mass, aligned the headlight beam, balanced the carbs and adjusted the idle speed before duly carrying out its first MOT in 26 years - it’s fully road legal and back in the system once more.

mot and tax

Being old and a 2 stoke the guys at Gas Monkey Motorcycles took a few snaps - way nicer than mine

Since I’ve got the original tax disc from 1997 and can’t display a new one - its still going to wear this one with survivors’ pride, I have to confess had it been possible I would have unashamedly gone back to the exact same post office some 26 years later to get the replacement.

IMG_0248

Sadly I’ve no action pictures as (ironically) I only got to ride it in the dark “with the lights on” and its been mainly wet ever since, but I’m still smiling like a Cheshire Cat – Honestly can’t ever remember it being this quick and compared to my vacuum cleaner hosed ZXR H1 weight wise at least it feels like a 125cc and a much nicer ride.

Rob / Zeus – I’m going to be stalking you both come spring and my Yellow headlight will be appearing in your mirrors.

Glad you got it all sorted and back on the road, looks amazing. I had to mot my Panigale today and got talking to my mot chap about daylight mots and he said he couldn’t see a problem with doing your bike in race trim as he does a few, it’s not too far for you either.
See you in the spring 👍

Unusual to see an '88 with the high pipes, but it looks great! Was it previously SORN'd, and if not, any problems trying to tax it after all these years? (Asking for a friend! )

To be honest until recently when I got whacked with a fine for non compliance on a TS50x 😂
I’d never SORN anything and was able to Tax the NSR within an hour of the MOT being done.
