Forks identification

Fri Jan 01, 2016 9:03 pm » Post: #1 » Download Post

Hi and Happy New Year to you all.

I have a bit a predicament with my fork set up and would really appreciate some help of you can.

I am midway through a rebuild of an MC21 and have just rebuilt the forks (all seals, bushes, bolts, compression washers, fluid etc) and re-fitted them to the bike.

I used the dreamgate step by step overhaul (http://www.dreamgate.ne.jp/NSR/technical/mc28SE_forks.html) which is specific to the MC28 forks, but all steps and parts seemed the same for the forks i have in my MC21.

It was only when i came to fit my spangly new Tyga RSW style front fender that i realised i do not have the same forks, as my fork bottoms do not have the lugs for the fender.

After a bit of additional research it seems all NSR 250 forks should have the lugs - MC16, MC18, MC21 & MC28 - so i am stumped as to what they are from.

Please see the pics below of the fork bottoms, the forks tops/caps with the adjusters and also the fender mounts and fender.

I would really appreciate if anyone can help me identify what these forks and the fender set up are from? I assume a Honda, but am now not sure at all.

Any ideas?

Cheers,
Max

Hi Maxhouse
It would appear you have vfr 400 nc 30 forks in your bike, they are also a little shorter than nsr ,and the tyre rubs the vee piece under heavy breaking
They work fine apart from this,
All the best for the new year,
jonmac
PS I have a very nice pr of 28 se forks for sale in ads,

Thanks for confirming JonnyMac.

I may well be interested in your 28 forks. Still reeling financially from xmas, but will check down the sofa for spare change.

Anyone in the market for a freshly rebuilt set of NC30 forks????

Cheers,
Max

If you swap to NSR forks, you will need the smaller NSR discs too. Maybe check the wheel width too?

Thanks Hurdy.

After a bit more checking in the garage, it seems the front end I have is all NC30 as the discs are 295mm (marked ED) and the caliper/pad/disc swept area looks right.

When i bought the bike, i also got a set of 275mm discs (marked ME) that came with the bike - i assume these are the standard MC21 discs?

Also supplied was a second set of calipers, that as far as i can tell are identical to the ones fitted (no part numbers visible on either set) - are the NC30 and MC21 calipers the same?

The very helpful JonMac has advised that the slightly shorter NC30 set up can result in clearance issues with the v-piece under heavy braking on track.

I am running Tyga RSW fairing lowers/uppers, does anyone know this set up provides any more (or indeed less) clearance around where the traditional v-piece would be if i were to stick with the NC30 set up? It is hard to tell just looking at reference pics.

I am trying to avoid having to swap out the whole front end to MC21/MC28, as a fair bit of cash has been thrown at getting it to the state it is in now.

Any help, advice or ridicule welcome!

Thanks again.
Max

MC21 and NC30 calipers are different. NC30 calipers can be used on an MC21, however MC21 [without modification] cannot be used on an NC30.

I ran RS250 NF5 RWU forks on my MC21 for a year, which are also considerably shorter than the standard MC21 forks, and using the standard NSR alloy Enkie 3" rim and 110/70x17 tyre, never had the tyre touch the standard V-piece. Having said that, during extreme braking the fender would touch the bottom of the headlight fairing. Bear in mind though, as Hurdy mentioned, you could have an over-sized wheel/tyre combination if it's all NC30, which in conjunction with the shorter forks, could exaggerate symptoms referred to by Johnnymac.

You could try an NF5 top triple clamp, which has quite a deep "gull" shape, and would allow you some compensation by reseating the NC30 forks about 20mm lower. By going this route you will have to relocate the ignition switch, consequently losing the steering lock.

Thanks for the feedback Andy.

Would you be able to elaborate on the compatibility of the calipers please? Or perhaps better is how to identify MC21 vs NC30 items?

I effectively got a 'box of bits' for braking parts and have built up the front end using the best parts of the two sets I got. The caliper halves, pistons, seals, pads etc etc all seemed the same.

I'd like to be sure I've not made an error regards parts etc, before I can even think about clearance issues.

From the laymans perspective, the calipers look the same but I may have missed something.

I have thrived the search, but was unable to find clarification.

Any help is much appreciated.

Incase it helps at all, here are pics of the set that are not being used currently.

I can post pics of the chosen set, built up and on the bike tomorrow.

Currently the tyre on the bike is a 110/70 17.

Cheers.
