1992 NSR250R SP / Rothmans build

Sun Oct 14, 2012 10:06 pm » Post: #1 » Download Post

So after selling my last NSR (my 10th one I have had pass through my garages), I said that if I got another one it would be for a rothmans replica.

Came across a rough, but running 1992 SP that was originally a Rothmans. Went down and picked it up this weekend and after looking it over, feel it's a good start for a decent track toy project.

Needs a complete tearing apart and cleaning up. need to pull heads/barrels and measure crank play, as well as make sure top end is okay. Would rather spend money now on pistons/rings now then have to replace the cylinders/heads cause I was too lazy to check them out.

Not going to go full factory restoration on this, as it will be for track days, but will go with the rothmans body work (most likely MC28 chinese stuff).

On the upside, it does have a US territory title, so if I ever decide to sell it/register it, it will be an easy job to do, making it worth some additional money here in the states.

It came with a near full set of Honda Factory Rothmans decals. But since I am going to go with cheapo aftermarket fairings, wont be using the factory decals. Probably will be seeing these decals up in the classifieds section real soon Wink

There's a great base there! Everything you need. Nice to see it's got Magteks, and what appear to be Swarbrick silencers. I've sent a few sets to the States over the years, so could well be.

Go for the MC28 fairing for the sleeker screen, but the '21 seat, I'd say. That way you don't need to worry about seat mounts not lining up and it keeps the nicer more angular look of the early 90's bikes.

I think you mean Charles! Wink

He has almost a complete set, and they're all genuine Honda decals, so best you PM him quick as I think they will be sold very quickly!

Still going through the decals to determine just how complete of a set I have. From my initial forst pass it's about 80% there (found a couple where 2 qty and not single qty). Also taking all decals out and making sure they are all good as they have been in storage for some time (8-9 years). It isnt a complete set but can be made complete with a couple after market decals (as the stock Honda parts are not available anymore).

Once I am done and take pics, will post them up in the classifieds section (oh, also need to do some looking into costs to get an idea what they are really worth).

okay, been a while trying to get the Aprilia RS250 my wife seized off the table. Got a new(ish) engine as well as a rebuilt/balanced crank and the RS back together, now just need to setup the valves (something I am not looking forward to, not a lot of room for my hands under that tank!).

Pulled the RS off the table and rolled the NSR up to start working on it. Lot's of dirt, grim, oil, etc to clean. Figured the best start would be the wheels. Pretty dirty, but they cleaned up well. need to get the tires pulled and some new rubber mounted.

Spent an hour in the garage this evening and tearing a little more into the NSR. Got it basically down to the engine, frame and front forks. Another couple hours and I should have the engine our, front end off and get ready to start cleaning it up and get ready to put it back together.

i see a dirt bike in the background that is not a honda product. Shocked isn't that highly unethical for someone in your NSR-WORLD capacity?

We are an accepting family. We have a Ducati 996, Aprilia RS250, Suzuki DRZ400SM, Yamaha TTR125L and a Yamaha YZ250F.

Carbs are in good working condition but covered in oil and dirt.

Better get me an NSR250R MC16/18/21 manual to figure out how to put these things back together. Oh I forgot just how much the NSR250R carbs are NOT LIKE the Honda RS250 carbs Confused

So much more to take apart, and no quick main jet change hole in the bottom of the bowls.

Finished cleaning the carbs. Found something interesting while assembling them. They didn't seem to match the diagrams in the MC16/18/21 service manual or the parts manual, so looked in my MC28 manual. Hmm, seems the carbs are off an MC28?

Got the engine our and the frame broken down. Now to clean things up.

If this ends up half as tidy as your Repsol '21, it'll be a lovely bike!

Nice to see you back working on an NSR again.

Even with those grotty MC28 carbs, it's still a damn sight easier to work on that any other street 250! It must be heaven after an Aprilia RS250! Laughing

I'm actually digging deeper then I did into my Repsol. At least the chassis. I did end up building a new engine for that one before selling it. Not sure I am going to do that just yet on this one.

Here is what I've done in about an hour on the frame/swing arm.

I need to keep reminding myself I am building a track bike and not a garage queen (or man's room trophy). But I just can't stop myself once I get going.

When it's stripped down like that, it makes sense to make the best job of it as possible. Nothing wrong with that.
