Exhaust dilemma.

Sun Aug 11, 2013 8:04 am » Post: #1 » Download Post

Finally got round to fitting some Nikkons to the '21, now the fairings are touching both sides in the area of the forward lower vent. Do I 1/ dent the chambers and/ or hack my new fairings around, or 2/ send the fookers back? How detremental would the dents be etc

All the Nikkons I've seen are very fat and based on (I think) the JHA pipe. We've almost always managed to space the fairings out to allow them to fit.

Very few aftermarket chambers fit within the confines of the OEM bodywork.

TYGA were the only company I know of that supplied any fitting instructions for their chambers, but it doesn't appear they are on their site any longer. There is however this statement:

"Do I need to cut the fairing to make my TYGA pipes fit?"

"No, unlike some other systems, this should not be necessary. We endeavour to make all TYGA products compatible with otherwise stock bikes. On the MC21, you may need to reposition the lower right side position of the fairing slightly. Remember to loosen off all brackets and fasteners and adjust bodywork. Always make sure there is clearance around the pipe or it will burn the bodywork. Only a small clearance is necessary to stop heat conduction. "

This is relevant information to almost all aftermarket MC21 and MC28 chambers. The only ones I seem to recall that fit inside stock bodywork are DogFight and some Ethos systems.

As I recall, the Nikons are indeed some of the fattest pipes, but a Stephen says, you should still be able to space the fairing lowers out far enough to accommodate them. Whether it's worth the effort for Nikons however, is debatable!

Also the JHA 500V chambers fit in the bodywork of an MC28 with no modifications.
But they were made for use with the racing JHA footpegs.
With the stock footpegs needs two spacers 10mm length behind the right footpeg bracket.

THREAD HIJACK has anyone got something a bit more constructive to add, I haven't actually seen any bad reports about these pipes in general only good. If the sound is good I ain't really bothered about a 1/4 of a bhp deficit or whatever versus a £600 set of pipes that isn't available any more etc

I would be denting the pipes before I cut the bodywork.

Good undamaged bodywork is near impossible to find these days and worth more than a pair of nikons!

If you want everything to fit as OE then put the stock pipes back on.

As we have already pointed out, most aftermarket pipes will require some sort of modification if they are being used on an otherwise stock bike.
