r motor vs. se motor?

Wed Mar 30, 2005 4:47 pm » Post: #1 » Download Post

hey all,
iv got an SE motor Im rebuilding and one of the cylinders looks pretty tore up. I want to use one of the cylinders off my R motor. I vaguely remember there being something different between the R and SE cylinders. the heads are also different right? the kv3l has higher compression than the kv3h part.
trying to get away with this motor without have to fork out the cash for a replate. between my 4 cylinders i have 2 good ones but one is a 'B' from an R and the other is an 'A' from an sp.
also...whats the trick to using muriatic acid to clean the aluminum off the nikasil? i was playing with it last night and it seems weak.

The cylinders will swap between the engines no problem. The main difference is going to be the gear box/clutch, and the side cover for the gear box. Besides that, you can swap things out without any real issue.

thanks chas,
now, would you put the kv3h or l heads on a roadbike? thinking of slapping the R model heads to make up for CA's wack gas.

Take care when putting SP (L) heads on R (H) cylinders as this raises the comp to a point where you'll need good fuel.

If you've got SP/SE (L) cylinders (taller than H) then fitting the R (H) head will lower the comp. Not too big a problem if you're just cruising through town, but it may make it harder to start and will lose bottom and midrange power. Top end will be a fraction down, but with more over rev.

Raising comp has a very similar effect to advancing the ignition.

aha! thats the answer i was lookin for. im stuck with my r cylinders now. I just cracked my one 'good' se cylinder. please dont ask how. Evil or Very Mad

what do you recommend as far as fuel goes for the r barrels and se heads? you think toluene can make up for california's 91 octane? if anything, i'll run race gas if need be.
