Oil injector tuning

Mon Aug 31, 2009 8:23 am » Post: #1 » Download Post

Did a 350km ride on the recently rebuilt NSR300 the other day, and noticed the bike takes a lot of oil! I worked it out, that for 27 litres of fuel, it took 720ml of oil. That works out at a ratio of 37.5:1.

Wondering if it's a good idea to adjust the oil injector back a bit, so that it's running a bit cleaner at 50:1, as I'm running fully synthetic castrol racing TT something. My only concern is perhaps the oil injector doesn't inject a linear amount of oil, and it might, for example be injecting 50:1, but nothing at idle, or something like that. In which case I would most likely just go to premixing the fuel.

What recommendations can I have?

My recommendation is set it up how Honda intended and leave it to do it's job.

Has worked on mine for street and track without fail...

Well, how much oil should it inject having it set up how Honda intended?

I set it up from the tuning part of the website, but I recall being confused as to the two different markings on the oil injector body. I set it up using the furtherest marking, and it poured smoke out, so I adjusted it to the closest marking but it seemed to be hitting the stop plate (leaving a little bit of slack in the cable with the throttle fully closed). Deciding to exercise caution, I decided not to ride it at this and adjusted it between the two settings somewhere and have been riding it like that.

As you can see, I don't want to be gooing things up by using too much oil, nor do I want to seize the thing.

Ah ok.

On mine its set to the max mark at max throttle. Can't really offer more than that - I set it up and left it.

Call me wild and crazy if you want but I always set them as Honda recommend, which is like this.

This section of the manual leaves a lot to be desired. You'd think something so important would have more than one half-invisible photo. There are two marks on the pulley. Am I looking at this correctly? The first one should line up at 50% throttle and the second at 100%, right? Gulp...

Thanks!
Craig

You think? There's a picture showing two marks, and some words which say to line them up. What more would you like? Rolling Eyes

Yes, and I would argue that their explanation of the way they line up is about as clear as yours so I stand behind my statement. If everything is so simple and we're supposed to know this already, why have a manual at all?

That's what I used the first time I did it a few years ago and it's worked out fine. It'll smoke when I first fire it up cold and then almost no smoke at speed once it's warmed up.

Mine uses about 100ml per US gal.

Ok Craig, deep breath mate!

What else would you like to see or hear, other than line the marks up? I really am at a loss as to how much more information you need?

From reading i think he has a different pump or something. And if the carburator was changed for the 300 the carburator and pump will not move in the original ratio, thus maybe having free play or hitting something in wide open. the bike will smoke during a cold start, that is very normal. And if the pump is runing rich it will smoke a lot during cold start.
It might also be wise to check if your oil is runing past the ring and into the cranks.

Ah, I do see the issue now.

Yes effectively either the diagram or the text are wrong here;

This is the diagram;

which is taken straight for the manual but according to the manual the mark as shown should be lined up with the mark on the pump body at 50% throttle.

By either a happy coincidence or by design it also ends up that adjusted like this the 2nd mark ends up lined up at full throttle.

With the pump like this and the first mark lined up

the throttle should be at 50%, as you can see the pulley looks the same as the one in the diagram.
If you where to adjust the pump so that this mark lines up at full throttle you'll get about 50 yards down the road before it seized. It also would also leave a load of slack in the cable at closed throttle which would be a pretty major clue that all is not well.

with the pump like this and the second mark lined up

the throttle should be at 100%

Nice to see some pictures, I knew there was something wrong with the instructions in the workshop page. Perhaps you can get those images put up in the workshop section?

I thought that it must be the case, and I adjusted mine as shown above, using the second index mark to the body index mark. It did smoke a LOT so I backed it off a bit. So, as said previously, it's now using the same amount of oil as if I were running a mixture of 37.5:1. Is it not advisable to adjust the oil injector off further?

I might go to premixing my fuel, as I'd like to run at 50:1 or 45:1. Helps stop the thank from rusting too!

Why?
HRC recommend 30-1 premix ratio and I don't know any two stroke (road) racer of any make of bike who uses any other ratio.
