MC18 R5/6 crank bearings the same as MC21?

Sun May 31, 2009 9:49 pm » Post: #1 » Download Post

Thought I had a stuffed R5 crank here but if I can find the outer bearings the rest seems OK. Big ends and centre bearing look good.

Hoping the outer bearings which still seem to be available via Mixalisen are the same for the R5.

The R2/4 which I'm also looking to rebuild seems a lost cause as many posts here attest but this is close to grenading as well.

any help here would be bloody great

Yeh have been in touch with Micheal in Greece and he is fairly sure the R5/6 cranks bearings are the same as the MC21 but not 100%

Have done many searches actually, and this particular issue seems untouched unless I missed something

Be good to know exactly what the differences are between the R5/6 MC18 crank and the MC21
Below is the right side outer bearing off the R5 and the crank without the outer bearings

I am pretty sure Geezagillard that the R5/6 uses two 83B569AA and one 83B569DA or the opposite, one 83B569AA and two 83B569DA... Unfortunately I don't remember... I sold before one year ago to a guy that wanted to rebuild his MC18 crank but I can't remember which bearings I sold to him...

Well not exactly right...

Treeboy has missed one letter on the first code...
83B569DA
83B569AA
These are the codes for the outer bearings...

don't know if this is of any help but i've got a twenty one crank fitted in my r5k , only thing that was done to the crank to make it fit was to machine 2mm from the counter weights.

very helpful Dunkenb thanks....I guess this confirms the R5 crank uses the same bearings and seals...excellent

Micheal the bearing I have here definately just has 83B569A not AA or DA.....perhaps its not significant anyway

does anyone know if you cant fit the centre bearing oring without splitting the crank...ie does it have enough elasticity to fit over the web and conrod?

Yes, it will stretch over the conrod and crank webs. Warm it in your hands or some warm water first, to make sure it's nice and supple.

Also, order a couple, in case you break one (or two). They`re only a few Dollars each.

Ok Geezagillard... I will call my local Koyo dealer today to find out if this bearing exists in their stock and I will reply as soon I can... Does the code stops there on the bearing or has some more letters or numbers...?

My local dealer just called me and told me that Koyo doesn't produce any bearing with the code 83B569A... The only bearing that is produced right now is the one with the code 83B569AA... Also told me that the most likely scenario is that the 83B569A bearing probably has been replaced with the 83B569AA bearing...

Geezagillard can you measure the 83B569A bearing...? Inner dimension, outer and width... Just to compare them to see if this thing that my Koyo dealer said stands... Most likely it is true but it's better to be careful..

this is the diagram of the bearing......both outer bearings seem to share inner and outer dimensions (not sure about width for the left hand bearing)

the right side bearing also has the outer locating ring which is 2mm thick and from pics I can find the left side bearing has none.
