Proper warm-up procedure?

Mon Aug 25, 2008 2:43 pm » Post: #1 » Download Post

What's the proper way to warm-up the engine on my MC-18? How long do you keep the choke on? I'm asking because I frequently foul the front plug, and I'm thinking I'm just not warming it up the right way. Also, what do you think of putting a different heat range plug in the front cylinder? Thanks.

Warming mine up isn't a problem... it's getting the bloody thing started that is! Laughing

I run mine with the choke for as long as it needs it -- rarely more than 15~30 seconds, then gently blip the throttle for another 30 seconds or so until it will idle on its own.

I find that by the time I've geared up and got on, it's up to around 50 degrees, and by the time I'm at the end of the road, at a comfortable 60. I'll resist the powerband and labouring the motor for a mile or so, but then again it takes that long to get out into somwhere where the law won't pounce on me for being a bit of a hooligan!

I wouldn't mess with the plugs on anything other than a well modified bike; it simply isn't necessary. I would be inclined to have a look inside the carbs and make sure the jetting is correct, and also clean the air filter if it's running too rich.

Warm up will vary dramatically depending on your location. The States is a pretty big place, so where someone in Seattle may experience climate very similar to me in SW England, someone in Texas will not, and consequently the procedure may be different! It's all a similar process however, get the choke off as soon as possible, and don't labour the motor for the first 5 mins or so.

"Warm up procedure" and "engine warm up procedure" Fenton... two very different things! Wink

In my opinion a warm up procedure isn't going to only foul one plug. I think you have some other issue that is causing that. The first thing I would do is perform a compression check and see where you're at. Not saying low compression will automatically foul a plug but it will give you an idea of how fresh the engine is to start with.

WhiteBaitNZ you're right that guy is a retard.

The whole reving hard while its cold is interesting.
Its not like a 4stroke where the oil gets hot and you have plain bearings to worry about . From cold to hot, the oil isn't going to vary a whole lot.
And keeping in mind the piston will expand with it gets hot, the chances of it nipping cold are very low.

my opinion always has been nice and gentle heat up, it's the piston expansion that you want to keep as regular as possible.

I'm happy to be proven wrong!

Anyone with a non-existant level of mechanical sympathy at cold start-up deserve premature engine failure in my opinion! Same as these retards that think it's clever to bounce their bore-strokes off the rev limiter in neutral because they've see some (sponsored) stunt rider who doesn't give two hoots about his motor do it!

I personally put a lot of the cracked exhaust bridges and transfer ports down to poor warm-up. If I'm wrong, so be it, but I'm not going to treat mine like an idiot to find out. It's been seriously abused for 13 years now (once warm) and none of the ports inside have ever cracked, which is more that can be said of some of the motors I've seen inside, some of which have been a lot newer!
