brake lights can't be turned off

Wed Oct 20, 2004 1:43 am » Post: #1 » Download Post

I have recently acquired a 1991 Pentax MC21 SP.

I don't know much about bikes so I am not clued up on the technical lingo yet.

There is two plugs under the brake lever that have been disconnected...

When I connect them up, my brake lights lite up and can't be turned off until I disconnect the plugs.
Is this easily fixed or do I need to be replacing major bits n pieces?

Any help or info is appreciated.

Sounds like the switch is up the swanny.

Just check to see if the thing is sticking by pulling and releasing the brake lever. you should be able to hear the switch clicking on and off. Don't need the ignition on for this as it's a mechanical switch.

Sometime just giving them a good squirt with WD40 can bring them back to life.

If the switch is indeed to blame then replace it. they're not expensive and it's only held in with one screw so a breeze to change.

Of course, with the front light switch disconnected, the police can't see your brake lights go on in their rear view mirror as you grab a handfull of front brake to slow down to an acceptable speed!! ;)

Also, it scares the sh*t out of your mates following you through the twisties too, when they think you are doing it all with little or no brakes!!

Update: (long winded story... but a happy ending) Laughing

Well I took Matt's advice - I checked to see if the brake lever was making a clicking sound whenever I engaged & disengaged the front brake lever... it wasn't.

So I unscrewed the brake switch assembly to see how it worked. When I did, I saw the switch - which depressed made the clicking sound... hmmm???

... So I hooked the the plugs back on -> the brakes light up. Pressed the switch -> brake lights turn off w00t!! released the switch -> brake lights on, double w00t!!. So I place the switch assembly back in its position under the brake lever and saw that when the brake lever was disengaged, it wasn't making enough contact with the switch to deactivate the lights.

Dilemma: How do I extend the switch length?
Solution: I grabbed my company laptop, and removed the nib from the pointer... and what do you know... it fits perfectly. I position the switch assembly back in place and it operates perfectly!!!
+=

Thanks for everyon'e help ... and light hearted banter Laughing

Really?

It's absolutely gorgeous weather here - bright and sunny, if a little cool and windy. Perfect for racing as you don't get too hot!

not if you strip it all down, leave it in bits on the garage floor. and tell her solicitor that your not putting it back together, they loose all interest in it. worked with my LC350. Laughing not sure it would have worked with the house Shocked
