Knocking and Pinging

Thu Mar 09, 2006 1:42 pm » Post: #1 » Download Post

Sorry fellas' for all the questions, but I've noticed my 94 SE starts to ping or knock after the engine warms up. I know I should at least try and use a 95-97 octane fuel, I am only running 93 right now. I've tryed to do a little research on the internet and found out that running a lower octane may ignite at a lower tempature,(pre-ignition) so I am trying to find out what the normal operating tempature the engine should be running at and can I try and use a colder plug if I can't find a higher octane gas? As far as I know the bike is all stock except the carbon fiber silencer I put on. Thanks

Everytime you hear that noise, it's doing a tiny bit of damage to your pistons...

You need to rejet to stop pinking, or you will damage the pistons and barrels and it'll cost you a small fortune to repair it.

However, normal temp is btween 70 and 80 celcius.

I'd never put anything as low as 93 in my NSR. Surely there is somewhere on the island where you can get better fuel! Try one of the USMC filling stations! Laughing

My Supra TT needed close to 100 and it was an import?? I used some octane booster with 97 here but no idea if it worked, just gave me peace of mind!!!

And what about the US isnt there fuel an even lower rating?

Do a few searches for 4 star fuel availability in the UK - I found 3 garages regularly stocking 102 octane 4 star all within 15 / 20 miles.
It is still generally (not widely) available but a little pricey.

Use the good stuff - always !

The fuel in the U.S. has a lower rating due to the way it is tested. (R+M)/2 I believe. I've read that our 87 octane is the equivalent of 91 (RON) octane elsewhere. So, the 93 octane I use is 97ish(?).

And they would be?...

I can only find two, both stocking 99RON, and they are hardly local to us (Torquay and Yarcombe). By the time you've got there and back you'll have used half a tank or more!

Why limit your range to less than half a tank? I don't see the point! There's no reason why a well set up street bike can't perform well with 97RON. Bill Limb's MC21 (as a 250) was making 69hp on unleaded, and you can buy that anywhere! Smile

Anyway, this isn't helping our friend in Okinawa is it?! Wink

Our friend in Okinawa needs to check and see if the octane rating is RON or (R+M)/2. I think Japan uses RON but if he's buying it from a U.S. military base...........

So its the type of gas which creates this pinging sound?
How exatcly bad is it for the pistons?

Very! Go find a minimum of 95 right away, or you could face engine meltdown, quite literally!

And if you really can't then lower your compression by fitting an extra gasket in there, or monkying round with SP and R barrels and heads.

OMG!!! Always wondered what knocking sounds like... Dam!!
Looked on the Google video for the sound of knocking… being having it for 1000km already… but did not know that was knocking until now!
I had always thought that sound was because of RC valve clearance or something.
What can be done at this stage?
Another rebuild?
I remember this started after a milled seizure due to oil pump filter clog by paint primer.
Took it to the shop that done the top end rebuild before the paint job, and then it came back with the knocking sound. Had no idea what that was.

Wow, I remember this thread the first time around.

First things first make sure it is detonation (pinking). If it is, as you roll off the throttle lightly the pinking should stop.

If thats the case you need to get inside and have a look and/or run better fuel and/or rejet.

Yes it does go off with a little throttle but comes back again on hard throttle in gear; the engine will hit a flat spot around 6000 rpm and kill plugs and die. Jetting is in work and getting parts right now.
Had a little peak down the plug hole, top cylinder running rich but no foreign or metal stuff inside, but the bottom cylinder had some glitter in it and maybe some dents on the head cant say for sure due to plug hole is only big enough for one eye view thus no depth perception.
