don't want to sound like the prophet of doom but this project sounds like more trouble than it is worth. if you are doing a resto then is it not better to start with an original bike than a hybrid '16/18? spliced looms are a big headache, i know from bitter experience. sorry for peeing on your parade. The carbs are from a PGMII MC18 or MC21-its got a TPS

Frame looks to be MC16-the MC18 has a kind of bevel on the upper sides of the main frame...My R5K does anyway.

PGMI off the '88 MC18

Heads look like MC16...But don't quote me on that.

Hey Jeff? you think it has 16 servo motor huh? is that the gizmo that has the cable that go to the power valves? would it be possible to change it to a 18 servo motor if i can find one? do you know which model had the pgmII? I know of a guy with a pgm II and a loom for sale here in calif, and how do you tell what pgm i have? it doesnt say on the box "either or"? i think i can get a 18 loom easier than a 16 so i am thinking i should upgrade it to 18 since i have most of it allready, the subrame? you think that piece is from a 16 welded on huh? did the 18 have a short subframe? if so i can just cut that piece off! i am gonna probably do the tyga tail anyway with their taillite also. MC18R2J/R4J (Mk1) - PGM-CDI - cast into theplastic casing.
MC18R5K/R6K (Mk2) - PGM-II - cast into the plastic casing.
MC21 - PGM-III - cast into the alloy housing.
MC28 - PGM-IV - cast into the plastic casing.

The MC16 has an entirely different setup, as someone's already mentioned, with two CDI "igniter" packs, located I think, up under the fuel tank somewhere.

The only easy way I can tell, just by looking, the MC16 servo from the later ones, is by the mounting points. They appear to be "flipped", which may be why Jeff says the motor may run in reverse if you try to use an early motor with a later harness, or vice versa.

ok? would it be safe to assume that the pgm II is the 3D unit that they talk about in the model history part? andy does the 18 servo motor mount like the sixteen or the 21? samk has a pgmII and harness, can you think of any reason why this setup would work on my eng 16 if i get the 18 servo motor unless there is something else i would need? i want to try not to have to graft anything in.... Very Happy OK i just went out and looked and i DO have a servo motor with mounting like the 21 Very Happy

That's because it sounds most likely that you have an MC18Mk1 wiring harness already.

No reason why you can't fit a Mk2 (PGM-II) setup, but you'll just need to route it and fix it where it touches! Remember, at the end of the day, you have an MC16 chassis, so nothing but MC16 parts are actually designed to fit.

The MC18 has a TPS too.

I think it's a red 2-wire connector that goes to the oil pump.
