1988 nsr250

Fri Jun 27, 2008 8:12 pm » Post: #1 » Download Post

Hi, I'm from vancouver and I'm new here.

I just bought my first bike and it's a 1988 nsr250.

I have a question:
there are four lights: Neutral, High beam, Turn signal and Oil.

What does the Oil light mean? It turns red every time I turn on the bike, but goes off immediately.

And there is a little light inside the speedometer called "speed", it shines every time my speed goes above 90km/h. Is it normal?

And last question:
How much gas do i need to ride 100km in the city?

Thank you very much! Very Happy

The oil light refers to the 2 stroke oil resevoir level. It goes on when you turn on to check bulb etc works ok as if you run out of 2 stroke oil the bikes engine will go bang.

It's normal if it's on all the time! Laughing (Yes, it's normal! Disconnect it if it's annoying you too much.)

Honda optimistally reckon 36km/ltr @ 50kmh for the Mk1 MC18, but I reckon only got 1/3rd of that figure (maybe less) from my MC21 the other day on a rather energetic ride in the country! Very Happy

Thanks.

And how do I know if there are enough oil?

It's so annoying without the fuel gauge. I don't know when I should turn to Reserve and go to a gas station. Yesterday I ran out of gas right at the intersection. sh*t!

Best practice with the oil is to fill the reservoir to the top, and then simply top it up after each ride! If I recall correctly, the light won't come on until the level drops to about 300cc, which is more than enough for a tank full of fuel!

Make sure the (in-tank) fuel filter and fuel tap assembly are clean, and that there's no dirt or debris floating around in the fuel tank, and then just rely on the reserve position on the tap to ensure you always have enough left to make it to a filling station. You'll get a feel for it, but we all get caught out by the reserve tap from time to time, which can freak you out a bit if you are rattling on a bit at the time! Laughing

Real bikes don't have fuel guages... there's much more important things like corner speed and late braking to be thinking about than how much fuel in on the guage! Very Happy

Reset your trip meter when you fill up, and make a note of how far you go before hitting reserve. Next time you'll have a good idea of when that's gonna happen. Wink

You'll be lucky to get 130km out of a tank full in Vancouver traffic. And reserve doesnt last for sh*t if you continue to ride it like it wants to be ridden.
As for the little red "speed light" Its always supposed to be on. Shocked

Electrical problems

Tue Oct 14, 2008 10:55 am » Post: #11 » Download Post

Hi there,

I have just bought a 1992 MC21 NSR250 and I have noticed a couple of things that are worrying me.

The light in the gauge cluster labelled "oil" is constantly on when im riding yet the oil reservoir is full. Any ideas what could be going on there?

Also my indicators and horn seem to only work when my headlight is on high beam? And how fast should the indicators flash? They seem to be flashing twice as fast as my old bike or a car?

Finally how long does the power band go for? I noticed when I get to 10,000 revs the bike stops accelerating?

Any help will be much appreciated.
