NSR manual in English, idea to get it done.

Mon Jul 23, 2007 9:28 pm » Post: #1 » Download Post

lets all make a common effort, around the world, something like wikipedia.

idea:

All interested, "adopt" one (or two) pages and pay to have exactly the one he wants, translated. He thereby also get the right to get any other page, that other people get translated. After some time all or most pages would be translated and Andy (who maybe coordinated this effort Wink ) can put it in the members section and have people pay to get in there.

Like this, we might be able to find someone, a student perhaps, who could do it, in his spare time. There wouldn't be the big strain, a whole book can put on a translator, he/she'd just have to do a few pages now and then. There could even be several translators.

As a bonus, it could give 10 additional poser points for being a real NSR afficionado Rolling Eyes

So is Japanese the only language you can get the manual in? Where can you even get one of those?!?!?!?!

They only come in Japanese yeah. No idea where to get one, but I suspect there are enough floating round out there.

The difficult part of the translation, is that it is a technical manual, and having 'any old' student translate it may not produce the right translations!

Ive used online translators to look at yahoo japan etc.. and its understandable but wouldnt cut it for a technical reference.
Jamie has started on the MC28 manual

Anything looking like english at a higher quality than automatic translation would be a huge step forwards.

We all know about the technical part and could easily revise an english text.

So there is nobody amongst more than 1000 NSR enthusiast, who think its a good idea ?

That's the problem.... people are always happy to "put up links"!

You have a Workshop Manual Fenton, why don't YOU send it to him and get a quote? Why am I volounteered just because he is in Exeter? Jamie was in Japan, working as an English teacher for several years, and even he hasn't got as far as we have translating the manual.

We did have a lot done, but the laptop the info was on was stolen last year, and foolishly there was no backup. I have since moved and don't have the space at the moment to set up a scanner to continue with the imaging, and the co-worker (who's wife is Japanese) was pissed off enough to not have the enthusiasm to start all over again just yet.

You will all soon find out, just as Nick Thorn did, that people are all take and no give. He got hold of an English "version" of the MC16 manual, had it re-mastered and printed, and offered the hard copy for $40. I believe it cost him about $400 to do, and couldn't even break even. Now people are e-mailing the PDF around, and Nick gets no credit whatsoever.

He e-mailed me the PDF, and when we do actually finish the complete manual, it will be on a subscription basis, and Nick will get a hand-out... if anyone actually subscribes! You can rest assured though, the manual WILL NOT be made available in PDF format, and I will do my best make it a right pain in the ass to download and copy it.

I'm not trying to piss on your idea Poul, but count me out as far as co-ordinating it. You won't get enough "givers". I could give you a list of names that would help... in fact, you can look the list of names up... find any thread concerning a UK meet, and any thread started by the name cgallant, cos it's always the same names!! When I first started work my new boss all those years ago (we're now partners) he said 3 things to me.

The first. Better to remain silent and be thought a fool, than to speak and remove all doubt.

The second. If you steal I'll kill you.

The third, If you need a work shop manual to build a race bike you shouldnt be building race bikes.

He's right.

My take on all this was the HRC manual I produced for the MC28 about 10 years ago. Took me about 4-5 months to complete, including scanning in all the diagrams and translating them. I managed to get a translation of the manual from a friend of a friend, but it was hard work making out what it all meant. Anyway I made no money out of it cos people just didn't want it. To be fair I didn't really want any money for it, but as Andy's said it would be nice to get some remuneration for my toils.

I would be the first to offer and might just ask around as there is a Japanese school not far away. I think the only way this would work is that we would do a few pages for the greater good and handed it over free for use on the site. As soon as a wallet is involved it’ll all come crashing down.

As for Andy’s help, he does so much for this site and the community in general I think we owe it to him to help out where ever we can. If NSR-World could make a few pennies out of hosting the info then all well and good.

hmmmmmm sorry Andy I am one of those who provided the pdf for the 16. I had no idea of the background as I got it from some guy in Mexico and was just interested in helping out others who were searching for one. I would be more than willing to give $40 for a hard copy of the manual. Flick me his details or post them here. I'll take down the pdf from the site I have it hosted on.

Don't worry David, I know your intentions were good, and you are also new in NSR circles, so there's no reason why you would have known.

I was just trying to make a point, because a lot is expected from "free" sites that really aren't free!

I can't find Nick's details on this PC, but I will post them later if anyone with a copy of his manual should want to contact him, even if it's just to say thank you!
