Stripping unnessessary parts

Thu May 10, 2007 9:28 pm » Post: #1 » Download Post

Morning, I have a quick couple of questions, with relation to my mc28 track bike.

When I remove the radiator over flow bottle, (i'll block off the hose that runs to the radiator), can this do any damage? I'm thinking expansion of water subsequent preasure and that the bottle possibly acts as a breather vessel?

There is another bottle that sits behind the dash cluster tucked away in the front behind the fairing, what is this for? It's got me as it's in a really inaccesssable place. Its empty at the moment anyway, but tracking back i can't see where it leads.

There is a switch much like the choke and and in the same location, that has 'lock' printed on it, not that i'm going to remove it but what the hell is that for?

Is there anything ese that I can strip on the bike thats not needed for track application?

Thanks in advance, Mick

The radiator MUST run to an expansion bottle, but that can be a small drinks bottle rather than the bulky proper one. It needs to be easily accessable so you can drain it when it gets full.

Remove the rear pillion pegs, and if you are keeping it on the track, saw off the subframe behind the front seat.

You can junk the oil pump and go premix for more weight saving / simplicity.

Strip the wiring loom to race electrics only - I saved a whole KG doing this on an FZR400.

Go on a diet! Most blokes I know would rather hack bits off their bike than loose the extra two stone they're carrying... Wink

Dude, i'm all of 80kgs dripping wet!

Seriousely thanks for the advice, any other pointers would be cool as, going through the wiring loom, thats sounds a bit complicated might have a look at the notes in the tuning part!

All of 80kgs eh?

Well, there masy be nothing you can do about that if you're a strapping lad, but I got rather fanatical when I was racing the 250.

I was 59kgs on the nose. I trained like a loon, and if I hit 60kgs then I'd run another 10kms to shed that extra kilo.

Now I'm 67kgs and still train, but no where near as crazily as I did before, and no longer do I read all the nutrition labels on the food in the supermarket!

Its more fun hacking bits off your bike than not eating.

Talking of hacking bits off though. If your running race fairings there are 2 small alloy lugs under the front engine mounts on the frame, these are no longer need so can be removed.... it all helps!

The litlte switch with "lock" on it is the steering lock, if u have the bars turned and pull it up with the card out it will lock the steering, probably not necessary on a race bike

The steering lock mechanism is pretty large, but light (I think it's magnesium). It's still worth removing though, but does provide a little structural rigidity in the headstock.

HRC produced a metal banking plate to bolt in its place.

Talking to Matt this evening, he went to the extreme with his '28 getting it under 118kg so it can be done and can be worth while.

Hmmm, I think I've got one of those little blanking plates for the headstock hole when you remove the steering lock.

Note that you'll have to remove the front end completely to get the steering lock mechanism out. And if I remember correctly you'll have to make a little jumper for the steering lock connector or you get errors. Not difficult and I've got one in my box. It can also be used for undoing the steering lock when you haven't got the card Wink
