Sun Apr 29, 2007 4:31 pm » Post: #1 » Download Post

I need to convert my NSR to GP shift o match my other bikes, I was looking at it and it doesn't look so easy. Does anybody know what is involved or if its even practicle?

Do you mean reverse shift ? 1. up rest down ?

Buy Tyga's rearset and you can have both

Yes reverse shift. Many uin hte US call it GP shift. I wanted to use the stock rear sets to retain the stock appearance.

If I wanted to do that with the stock rearsets, I would hack the pushrod in half, and make a pivot point off the front lower mounting. I reckon that would work OK.

I'll rough up a diagram, as it's easier to illustrate than describe... being as I'm no teacher!! Very Happy

Does that make sense?

Of course the geometry will need a little bit of fiddling with, but I'm sure you can get the idea. This will allow the actuator arm on the selector shaft to stay roughly in the standard orientation.

Looks reasonable Andy; just wondering - whats the advantages of "GP shift" faster shifting?

Some like street shift and somne like race shift (reverse, GP etc). I like street shift on a street bike, race shift on road racers and street again on MX and Supermoto.

Andy's diagram would work, and you could fiddle around with the ratios for a soft comfortable shift that diddn't destroy your boots and toes, or a harder, more positive shift.

I've never run an NSR more than about 2 minutes with stock steps, so I've no idea why you can't run race shift. Why is it?

Race shift allows you to just stamp on the lever to change up the cogs, which can be handy if you're at full volume through a fast left hander, well banked over and you can't get your foot under the lever to shift up.

It can also be a little more tidy hammering down the chute and just sort of resting your foot on the lever to switch cogs.

Check out Max Biaggi when he's down the straight. He uses normal street shift and everytime he hooks a gear his knee comes out a couple of inches. Any 125cc GP team boss would complain bitterly about that as you'd lose 1mph atthe end of the road.

On the '18 the arm can be moved though 180deg to give race shift and still clear the side stand.

As the '21 isnt like the RS250 and is more of a road bike compaired to the '18 you can't run race shift unless you..

a, remove the side stand

b, get the HRC footrests and arm

c, do what Andy says

d, make it hand change

He is 'reasonably' quick though Matt so I'm sure they'd grant him a little artistic license... Wink

You can switch it with the stock rear sets. I've done it with no issues in the past. You may need to do a little cutting/grinding if your going to keep the side stand, but it's doable.

I'm not drawing any more diagrams!

If that ain't clear enough, either buy a set of rearsets or stick with the stock shift pattern! Very Happy

That is very VERY basic engineering.
