Can anybody please give me some advice. I've recently bought a 150 NSR 1997 model. It goes well, however the engine is extremely noisy. I've already had the piston replaced and some work done on the clutch. This lessened the noise marginally. The local machanic who worked on the bike said that the "valve" is working properly and that the noise is typical of 2 stroke bikes - although I have heard other 2 stoke bikes (same model) purring like kittens. The noise generally sounds very "tinny" and sometimes it actually disappears (but only for a few seconds). This is my first 2 stroke bike and whilst I know that 2 stroke engines are somewhat noisier than 4 stroke, I think mine is just tooooo bad! I'd really appreciate some advice and/or comments... thanks guys

The NSR150SP can be a noisy little bugger. Ive done a couple of noisy 150's and it was down to piston/bore clearance. Hunted through pistons and got the clearance at 0.04mm. This seemed to work. Not perfect, but better.
I even know of one guy that complained to AP Honda (Honda Thailand) about a noisy 150SP and he was told, they all sound like that mister.
You really have to consider the price and realise that these are 'made in Thailand' budget bikes. I know that you want something to purr but that ain't gonna happen with an NSR150SP!

Thanks for the reply and the empathy Matt. I certainly wouldn't mind opening up the engine myself and replacing the piston and cylinder myself.

The engine noise is okay with me. Its the bloody exhaust. Making noise so sharp that its a modded 125 or 110cc Bike. I mean, can we NSR150's get to hear sound like those 250cc bike?
By the way, my bike model is NSR 150 RR. Does it have anything different? The year of the model is '97 I guess.
The NSR150RR has different cylinder/piston and head combination. The cylinder is no where near as aggressively ported as the SP version. Thankfully though the SP cylinder just bolts on
There may be some other differences but not sure at this point.

Just out of interest, as I`ve just got a 300 kit, which cylinders are used for this set-up?
Obviuosly if it`s the rr ones, I`m wondering if the engine would be able to cope with sp spec porting without needing rebuilding every five minutes.
Andy is of course correct. And thinking about it, why would anyone want to use the 'inferior' RR barrels when SP's are available.
The internals of the NSR150 are reasonable robust so the RR cylinder will struggle to stress anything. Even the SP with a pipe is only making 30 odd ponies with no engine work.
We ran 40hp NSR150's back in '96 and didn't suffer any engine failures. A bit of clutch slip was the worst we had to deal with but that was cured with some stronger clutch springs.
