Buying Guide

Thu Mar 30, 2006 9:25 am » Post: #1 » Download Post

Hi,
I tried searching the website and forum for buying guide but there were not complete threads, just threads containing some information. So here are a few pertinant questions:-
  1. Does anyone have any reccomendations for buying? What are the most common problems and fixes.
  2. For example, with the RGV, the crank lasts max 30,000 miles and pistons typically need changing every typically 10,000 miles - same for NSR?
  3. Any particular gearbox probelms that can be fixed by replacing with later models (not undercut F3). How long does a clutcjh last (normal road use, not CR box)
  4. When doing teh wiresplice derestrict mod to derestrict, is rejetting required?
  5. I checked the tuning section, airbox mods were not covered. Anything to look out for here?
  6. WHat are the typical lifespan of the rear suspension and shocker? I always found Honda items tend to last a little longer than suzuki, especially since these bikes have spent a lot of time in Japan not ridden around in English road salt stew.

The thread could be made sticky or edited and placed on the main site for people twho are looking for an NSR and want to check for any pitfals.

Cheers, Vincent

1) - dont think you are going to get an answer to this
2) - yes
3) - no, how long is a peice of string depends on how abusive to your clutch you are.
4) - no
5) - there is no specific, I have 6x10mm holes Fontyyy has 2xholes Dave has cut the front off, Andy doesnt run one.
6) - again depends on the bikes life but all NSRs are imported so they are sprung for the Jap market so for £80 get it rebuilt.

I did the wire splice on my old R and never needed to rejet.

have a read here http://www.tyga-performance.com/pages/mc21wiresplice.php

Tyga dont mention a re-jet, all you are doing is taking the 112MPH restriction away, and I am pretty sure it doesnt mention a rejet on here either.

sooooooooooooooo whats ya beef Question

What does it say on this very site about jetting after any change?
I agree with that completely. It's best practice.

It takes 5 mins to do a plug chop so the question should really be: Why WOULDN'T you check n jet? Smile Wink

because all you are doing is removing a speed restriction put there because of Japanese law, the bike is designed to run without the restriction.

errr, no comment on the jetting side. but the wire splice is not just a speed delimeter, it also (if you do it all) fools the pgm into thinking you never get outta 3rd? so 4th 5th and 6th have a more agressive ignition curve!!!! Isnt it?

Fair point! but both your links posted talk about doing both!! I guess if you only wana derestrict the limiter then fine, but why? why not do both? i assumed he wanted it fully derestricted?
