Top end rebuild - engine in or out?

Fri Mar 24, 2006 2:17 am » Post: #1 » Download Post

Can a top end rebuild be done with the engine still mounted in the bike, or does it need to come out?

Edit: Let me rephrase, is it worth the hassle to remove the engine from the bike to do a top end rebuild? Or is it easier to just leave it in there and work on it?

Leave it in the frame. You can do everything without removing it. You can even change the crankshaft if you can't be bothered to pull the engine out.

Some of the base nuts of the top cylinder just looks a bit hard to reach.

That's where a special tool comes in handy. Not striclty necessary though as you can still sneak in there.

Leave the motor in...no need to take it out and create a bigger job than it should be. Its a bit trickey to get the top cylinder bolts out without the "special tool" bit with some tinkering and a variety of tools, you should be able to get it out. Next time I do a topend on the 28, I'll have the "special tool" Wink

Yeah, What's the word on the Jha tool?

Jezza...keep the engine in. My rebuild turned into...

engine removal
hours of cleaning
new throttle,rc valve & clutch cables
new engine mounts
new water hoses
HRC jet kit
MC28 front end(complete)
MC28 rearshock
weeks waiting for parts from Japan.

Don't get me wrong, It should be sweet when it's back together & running, I hope. It won't make any magazine covers like some others but it's mine. Twisted Evil

F@#kin awesome bike Frank. Just got my copy today.

Is that what you guys are on about Smile

But from memory it still looks kind of cramped to get tools to the front base nuts of the top cylinder, but then again my memory is not that great Very Happy

Got to get myself one of them JHA tools then.

Yes it is, it's in the Oxford English Dictionary and is therefore an English word.
