Question on how long should your tyres last @ Track day's

Fri Mar 03, 2006 3:49 pm » Post: #1 » Download Post

Well title says it all, Just wondering what youd expect to get out of a tyre using it at several track's. I run GP208's at the mo im going to GPR70's next, however, after 2 or 3 track days im wondering if the tyres should be changed, the last set i had went blue and felt a bit harder at the next day!!! shoudl i change them every 2 or 3 tracks or should i use tread as an indication.. What do you chaps think or DO??? i do use the bike on the road but not much! so its primaryly tracks so is it a case of heat cycle's!!!! No idea! anyone?

Yeah I'd do 3-4 days maximum. Depends on the wear also, but the heat cycle effect is the biggest factor. If it's a scorching day and you're on an abrasive track, riding like Mick or something, the tyres might not even last for the 8 sessions... GPR's will be better for the heat cycling, as they are road biased so will be able to cope with that more easily, unlike the GP's which are track orientated...

I accidentally bought some cut slicks on ebay, KR106 and 108's... Hmm!

Depends how smooth you are, if your an animal with the throttle and brakes you can knock a set out in 1/2 a day, if you're Max Biaggi type smooth they might do all year.
If you've blued them up they are past their best as they have overheated.

MMMMMMMM thats what i thought, in the past ive always done a track day on a bike ive used everywhere (blade ZXR etc etc) so when blue, they still worked well on the road and by the time the next track day came along i was on a new set anyway.

But with the NSR after cadwell the tyres where blue (that was the 2nd track day on the tyres) i went to Donnington with you guys without using the bike on the road and they felt hard, so sounds like ill get cadwell in this year and another and that will be about it for this new set!!.....MMMM Had gpr70's on the NC30 and they where very gooooood...

Thanks for the comments, i just wanted to make sure..

LOL ill stick the ol GP's on the BROS!!!! Twisted Evil Shocked

They've gone off when you can feel they've gone off. Being blue is an indication you've worked them hard and I believe it's the oils coming out of the rubber, but doesn't neccessarily mean they're knackered.

I raced half a season on GPR70's and they were fine, though you do less laps racing than track daying. I changed them when I could feel them moving around more than I expected them to.

This is from an old post I found on superbikeschool.com

'Street compound tires will wear much slower than race compound and are designed to wear off old rubber to be replaced by whats underneath. The compound is designed to last thru many heat cycles.

Bluing can be caused by more than one thing. Bottom line, it's rubber that has lost it's oil. The rubber is 'cooked'. Finding a narrow band of blue at the edge of the tire is not abnormal. It does not mean the whole tire is 'cooked'. The next time you roll it over to that point the old stuff will wear off and newer rubber exposed. Theoretically.

Regarding race compound tires...

Rubber will also react with the oxygen in the air to turn blue. Another rule of thumb: stick your thumb nail in the rubber. If it comes back, that's a good thing. If you can't dent the rubber with your fingernail...bad. Learn to read tire codes. Especially the "born on" date. Compound codes and country of origin might be nice to know as well...but, the rule is two years old. No matter what color it is. '

I have 3 trackdays on my Pirelli slicks. At the last trackday I ask the Dunlop tire guy how long a set of tires should last. His reply was when you get more movement then you are comfortable with then you should replace them.

I think what brand you use makes a huge difference, like Steve C I use Pirelli skicks most of the time and they are a very good all round tyre and i get quite a few track days out of a pair, they are even qiute good on the road.

I used Dunlop slicks for while but found these felt like they went off pretty fast, but saything that the GPR70 that myself and Andy use so much often turn blue but soon scrub in again after a little ride.

On my 300 im running Mich slicks (cut a tad) on the road and track and these seem to be lasting forever, although they arnt that sure footed on the salted roads we have right now, makes for fun riding though!

MMM this is intresting reading, by the sounds of it i got rid of the last set in good time, it was hard and felt odd, I remeber running MEZ1's and reinsports and they seem to last longer than the 208s but then i did use them on the road to scub them back in!!!!

I think after this set ill definatly go GPR70's that way i know what to expect!!

I've run 'blued' 090s at a Cadwell trackday and had no problems at all. Like the article that max posted the tyres look normal after the first session and they were fine all that day and the first Llandow trackday as well, changed em after that though.

I hav a set of 090s on that have done one day at Dono and I am hoping (maybe in vain) that they are gonna last me at least another 3 trackdays this year.
