starting after stopping problem...

Sat Jun 18, 2005 3:48 am » Post: #1 » Download Post

I have a problem with starting my bike after it's stopped for a particular length of time, no matter what the distance of the journey I've travelled.

It seems that if I stop for about less than 10 minutes, I am able to start the bike again, but if I stop for say about 30 minutes, I can't kick start it and it needs a push/roll start. It starts very easily from cold though - it honestly took me one kick to start it on this 13ºC Melbourne morning.

I'm not too mechanically minded so I have tried simple things to troubleshoot the problem.

I've tried turning it off using the key or using the kill switch without any success to remedy the problem.

I thought that it might be the fuel flooding the carbs, so I've tried switching off the fuel tap and starving the bike of petrol before stopping it and that hasn't fixed it either.

My bike is a stock 1991 MC21 SP with a KISS derestrictor box.

If anyone has experienced this and fixed it, I would appreciate your input or if anyone has any suggestions of where to look next.

Thanks in advanced,

Jerry

Have you checked the battery?

Apologies for the late reply, have not accessed the PC for the past few days.

The battery is 6 months old and I've checked the voltage on it and it reads something like 14 or so.

Can coils overheat or something like that to prevent them working? I'll try to find another set and swap them out.

Thanks again, and keep the suggestions coming.

Mine dose the same thing, if warm or cold it takes just a kick or 2 to get it going, Someone said to me if you leave it for a long time, the fuel vapourises and hence you need to kick it a few more times than when just switched of or cold, try a little gas when kicking it over, i did and it no issue now, except when i give it to much and it oils up/ floods, but i am new to these and getting use to it, It could be that my coils are gone to but for the timebeing a tiny little throttle fixes it when left for 30 - 40 mins,

Sure it would vapourise, but when the fuel gets low it just gets filled up again, its not like it has to rely on a pump to get it to the carbs.

Cant see that being the cause, not on an NSR anyway.

Bryan; thanks mate - much appreciated.

rc46; I'll give that a go next time I'm out. I've never given it a bit of throttle on re-startup as I've never had to do it when starting it up from cold Confused

nsrmonkey; yeah I actually do try to starve the bike of fuel before I kill it, but it heats up quite quick so I don't let it idle long enough to stall it.

Thanks for all your input guys.
