Aussie MC21 SE Build

Thu Dec 02, 2010 11:58 am » Post: #1 » Download Post

Hi all, have been lurking around the forum for a while now and the other day i finally picked up a MC21 locally from a friend of a friend. Needs a bit of work (what bike doesnt though!). From what i can tell it seems like i will need:

- New Body Work (am going to go the Tyga Kit)
- Top End Rebuild (motor runs ok but i figure i might as well give it a rebuild to be safe)

Now the brakes are looking a bit second rate so i was thinking about going for a NC35 front end. Im aware whats invloved so anyone with any extra info would be appreciated!! (and where i can find one Very Happy )

I also know where i can get my hands on a full RVF swing arm assembelly.. for next to nothing. I'm aware that its a bit of an effort to convert using the NC35 rear end but i was wondering whats actually involved. I'm an Mechanical Engineer that runs out of my own workshop with access to high class welders and machinists so if its only a bit of welding and machining then I think i will give it ago!!

Will post some progress pictures as I advance along.

RE: the rvf rear end The rvf swing arm has an off set shock tunnel and needs alot of work to fit. Better to go for the mc28 arm or a cheaper alternative is to use an nc24(vfr400) arm( no offset tunnel) fitted with an nc30 axle.
I've fitted an nc30 axle to the nc24 swing arm i've got. you just need to machine the bearing surface on the stub axle to fit it into the nc24 hub, and then re-harden the bearing surface.
i'm also using the shock linkage from an mc28.
whole assemble has only cost me £20.( managed to get the wheel for free)
if you can get hold of a complete rear end for next to nothing keep the wheel and sell the rest !! Very Happy
hope this is of some help.

Welcome ls2_297,

I notice you posted a response to MightBeHRC, which I've removed. That character is an alias of Chris Burke, and I would strongly advise you to do some research on him before parting with any cash for any of his stuff.

He also advertises as something like Merrilyn Enterprises on eBay, and forums all over the place are littered with stories about missing cash and missing parts.

His alias isn't banned as I think it's better to closely monitor it that to let on I know it's him.

As for your question, and Duncan's response... if you have those resources then it won't be a massive issue to fit an NC35 arm, although as he says, the NC has an offset shock, so you would be much better off with an MC28 arm.

Racer38 did this years ago with an NC30 swingarm:

Unless you aren't concerned about performance, none of the Pro-Arms will be as good as a Gull-Arm.

You seem to have photoshop'd out one moody wife!!

The conversion is a ball ache, but the MC28 didn't exist when I started that project with the MC18. You need to cut out a chuck of the shock tunnel, then fabricate and weld on a new shock linkage mount. Lastly a spacer was made to offset the rear wheel from the swingarm.

I would recommend MC28 swinger.

Seat unit too... shame it's not quite a proper fit. A bit of jiggling if you're good with the fibreglass though could sort it.

have decided to stick with the gull-arm untill i find a MC28 unit, just seems a whole lot easier. Originally i was aiming for xmas but im now going to take my time and strip it down completely and start from scratch.... a bit more pain but i do think it will be more rewarding!!!

Scotch what I said about machining the nc30 parts. They'll fit straight in using nc30 bearings! Very Happy
