Hello Jay, and welcome to NSR-WORLD.

The MC16 motor is solidly mounted in the frame, so you will need to machine alloy or nylon inserts to press into the later crankcases. The upper rear mount will be your biggest problem, as the mounts are significantly different between the MC16 and later cases.

mc 18 engine in mc16

Fri Nov 13, 2015 7:13 pm » Post: #3 » Download Post

got engine to fit,not too hard all mounts line up front mount hard mounts as rubbers in frame on mc18,top crankcase mount lines up just needs a spacer on each side, rear lower mount needed to file small amount off case and frame crossmember to clear ,as case is slightly larger to accommodate rubber mounts.no need for inserts in cases, hard mount at front others rubber as was in mc 18. any one got mk1 mc 18 swingarm and wheel spindle, needed to complete rolling chassis. going for 1988 rs250 look. cheers

If you're retaining any rubber mounts, you're going to need a torque arm, or the motor will almost certainly throw the chain at some point.

88~97 all utilise a torque link. As I say, the MC16 motor was solid mounted for a reason, and will need solid inserts in the engine mounts.

There should be no reason why the MC18 motor cannot be fitted in the exact same position as the MC16 motor. In fact, with solid inserts in the mounts, I imagine [off the top of my head] it ends up narrower overall than the MC16, and can be shimmed similar to an RS250 NF5 motor.

Easier and much quicker than sourcing and adapting an MC18 swingarm for now.

If you have an '88 R2/4J swingarm already, then hopefully it will be a relatively straightforward fit.

Depending on the width between the swingarm mounts, there may even be the possibility of using/adapting the MC18 torque link.

got aluminium inserts for cases done, engine in frame.couldnt use the tourqe arm even though mc18 swingarm 4mm narrower than mc 16.presume mc18 frame must be a bit wider at swingarm pivot point to accommodate tourqe arm.swingarm direct fit with 4mm spacer,mc21 rear wheel in and chain run spot on.got mc16 shock in with mc 18 dog bone and plates, need to change to mc 16 set up as mc 16 dog bone shorter.will play with ride height anyway.

update on progress,my mc18 swingarm too pitted to scotchbrite finish and laquer so have etch and highbuild primed to paint silver,in the meantime found very small crack in frame which I didn't notice before stripping, sanding, brush finishing and lacquering doh! 10 hours wasted, will tig weld and paint frame silver to match swingarm.paint stripped my mc21 wheels look cool as they are, like lc ones of the day with polished rim! they will be painted in mica white this week.been offered some standard mc18 pipes for £100 but tempted to get dogfight ones off gecko, are they any good.
going to have a go at diy plating on fastners

Aftermarket pipes are a huge saving in weight, but we've not tested any yet that are better, or even as good as OEM R5/6K pipes.

Hard to fault the R2/4J pipes either, however we've not done so much testing with the '88 models.

You will probably notice a considerable drop in mid-range if you go with race pipes.
