To Anodize or Powder Coat Swingarm???

Fri Feb 15, 2013 8:48 am » Post: #1 » Download Post

After a bit of advice or some ideas on peoples experiences with anodizing or powder coating an MC21 swingarm.

I believe the anodizing will be more durable but i've heard that the rough sections can come out a little dark and it can fade or stain easily with solvents? Although i imagine this may be the result of poor workmanship rather than a flaw of the process itself?

Powder coating is my other option in a metallic satin silver finish.

What are your thoughts or experiences?

Cheers.

Thanks Jon, that's all the inspiration i need, agreed the brushed, factory finish looks the the best, i have two swingarms here, one has an ugly gouge similar to yours that has met with a rearset at some stage that makes anodizing a hassle, and the other has a missing pick up spool and a large graze.

Think i'll duck down to the coaters on Monday and get him to add the swinger to the parts being done at the moment.

Problem with anodizing the part that has already been anodized is that you have to strip old finish first and for that they will dip it in Acid which will leave the surface mat, then you will have to polish it and apply the brushed finish before having it anodized, lot's of work...

I have had some success cleaning up the frame and swingarm using fine grit sanding pad (2000 or more) and water

In the past i have used oven cleaner to strip old anodizing and prepare the surface myself but in this instance i'ce decided to powdercoat the swinger.

Check this thread out... http://nsr250.net/forums/viewtopic.php?t=11156

If you have somewhere fairly local that can anodise it, it's the only way to go!

I anodise my frame and swingarm, and was quite happy with the results. Here you have a couple of photos of the swingarm :
