NSR 2 stroke oil tank issue

Tue May 08, 2012 8:29 pm » Post: #1 » Download Post

Sorry for the NOOB question, but I let my MC21 sit for a year. Now I noticed the 2 stroke oil tank is empty, where did the oil go? (not on ground so no leak)...Obviously I will top it up, but I don't remember if the service guys put in synthetic or not, does it matter? Crying or Very sad

Your oil will be in your gear box.
You will find its your oil seal in the oil pump that's failed. You will need to replace this before you fill up again, and change the gear box oil as this will be useless now.
there is plenty of info on how to this, use the search facility.

I always use fully synth, as I think most do here.

Russ is likely "mostly" correct!

It's highly likely the oil seal has slipped down the pump drive shaft, but unlikely that it has actually "failed".

In the vast majority of cases, in fact every case I've encountered personally, which includes having a seal "slip" on my own MC21 years ago, the seal can be carefully cleaned and degreased, and then pressed back into place for years of further service.

Personally I now recommend using a very light smear of RTV sealant on the outside of the seal to help act as a bonding agent once it's pressed back into place. Whilst the seal on my MC21 never actually dropped clear of its housing, I only pressed mine back into place (no additional sealant to "glue" it in position), and it's been sound for some 15 years now!

The seal is actually a strange size, and not available from Honda. A search should reveal some posts that give information the size of the seal and ideas where similar items can be purchased.

Thank you also Andy, I did some searching and this seems to be a common problem. Is it a difficult fix? I've searched and didn't find any pictures if not I'll take it to the local grey bike mechanic to see if they can fix it. Thanks again Very Happy

It's a 5 minute (free) fix. Unbolt the oil pump, lift the body clear of the crank case, give it all a wipe clean with some kitchen towel, push the seal back into place, and bolt the pump back on!

Taking the bike to a mechanic will likely mean a minimum of 1hr labour. Depending on where you are that could be anything up to £50/$75...

Don't forget, as Russ says, drain and renew the transmission oil after.*

*Assuming this is your problem! You may have just not realised how much oil you used before putting the bike away last time! Check the main tank is empty too, and not just the little reservoir where you top up! Laughing

Always use good quality, fully synthetic 2-stroke oil.
