Hi all

I've started on a labour of love restoration, a 'barn find' HRC Formula 3 NSR250 race bike from 1988. I found this bike on a trip to Japan late 2010, a rare find even over there... so though it had been left outside for 10 or more years, complete with both birds & bees nests, it was still well worth the effort to save. I'm well on with the restoration, so thought I'd share the progress so far.

I quite fancied this when it was up on your site...what was up with the motor or had it just sat for too long?

Yeah the MC18F3 for a lot of people is the best, as it was most similar to the RS250 NF5 racer. The bike looked a lot worse at first glance than it was and I was really pleased on 'strip down' to see most of it come up fresh with some TLC. The exhausts have taken a lot of fabrication repairs and the engine was probably the worst part, simply because the birds nest in the airbox meant bits of dirt, twiggs and poop had fallen into the crankcases. I've spent most time and money fixing the engine, raiding my new old stock hoard to fit a new crank, pistons, rings, little ends, gudgeon pins, all seals etc. Just waiting on clutch plates to arrive and then I should be getting close to having the motor finished. The next big hurdle is the bodywork, as I want it to look like the brochure/manual and thats gonna take a chunk of budget. Anyway, happy enough so far and it's a keeper for sure - as I'm unlikely to find another.

Had a good look at your mates TZ and RS restorations when I went over St Neots motorcycles last weekend and was well impressed by his work, looks like you are aiming for the same standard.

Yes it's coming on. Probably not going to race it, but at thre moment I'm not a 'show man' just yet either, too busy repairing and racing to show but there is hope for the future. I am looking forward to the day when people see the HRC F3 NSR250 in it's proper place, ie. more important and fare rarer than the RS250 - at least to the Japanes manufacturer (and bike sales). All good and a nice hoby.

Yeah you know me Dan, never was too fussy, always said if you were too fussy, youd end up with nothing!! By the way your old nsr is still going well, was flying at Llandow yesterday. That WAS one of my better buys.
