1st gear wheelies

Mon Mar 21, 2011 5:18 pm » Post: #1 » Download Post

I have a problem pulling off from the start line , with the 300 kit it wants to flip over .
What are my options ? Is there a longer 1st gear ? Do i change the primary ratios ?
Most of the tracks i ride are 15-40/42 .
Thanks for any advice .

Neal I am sure its just a matter of getting the launch right, more clutch slip or less throttle... Very Happy

Even the 750's you race against will flip if they just drop the clutch Exclamation

Yes you can make the 1st gear ratio taller but this will not help with not wheeling the bike, it is only so that you don't have to change gear before turn one on most tracks...

I've never had that problem with my NSR300... then again I've only ridden on the street. Mine never feels like it would flip. If I let the clutch out below 6000rpm then it just really bogs down Sad I have to get it around 7k and slowly let the clutch out feeding in throttle. If I do it right it will take off rapidly but only slightly come up on the front. Are you really dialling in the revs/being abrupt or is it THAT powerful? Mine gets 65hp on the dyno. Same gearing too.

You can try pressing a little the rear brake or start it with lower reps..
I hate to slip the cluch! Just start it where it goes fine no more no less

I just do the moto-cross thing of keeping the throttle full open and slipping the clutch if the front starts to come up too much. You soon get the hang of it.
I used to roll off the throttle and dip/fan the clutch too.
I find it easier and more consistent to just fan the clutch now.

The bike is that strong - haha Very Happy
I was thinking if there was a longer 1st gear ratio or if i had to make one , what a decent ratio would be ?

I don't like to slip the dry clutch . It's mainly for the start of the race that its a problem .

You're worried about flipping an NSR250? Really? Try something like a geared down Aprilia Tuono, that's the kind of bike that feels like it will flip if you give it too much gas in first (or second) gear.

You can flip a 50cc bike over, if you really want to.

The clutches are designed to take a bit of stick.
When racing, the usual mechanical sympathy rules take a back seat.
If you want to win, I don't see how you can take off from the start line without giving the clutch a good amount of slipping? If the bloke next to you slips the clutch and tears off down the track. Then you pull away like you're on a Sunday drive to the chippy, then clutch slipping man will have the advantage.
Of course, if you aren't racing then it's a different story.
I used to get some lovely wheelies out of my 300 mc21. 1st, 2nd and 3rd gear power wheelies.
When we did the Llandow track day it was going at a fair old lick all day when Wayne and myself were "not racing" each other. I didn't have a problem with it wheelying or trying to flip over at any time on that day. Completely standard gearing in the gearbox and final drive.
If you're getting uncontrolable wheelies from your 300, it's probably not the fault of the bike.

OMG you fellas...

The man is BLATANTLY having a dig at the moderators, didn't you read those enthusiastic threads Neal started about his 300 race bike project and the great success he's had with his custom exhaust system? The threads that brought on an unexpected cascade of s**t slinging and misery (and some frantic digging out of old GT Performance dyno graphs *groan*...) from well, Andy on his anti-300 crusade mostly lol.

What you should have written to keep up with the craic was: *cough* (clears throat)

"If you want to prevent those insane power wheelies from your monster engined bike all you need to do is swap your 300 motor out for something lame like an F3 motor - that'll rape the mid range out of her and you'll be launching with your front wheel firmly glued to ground from then on".

ROTFLMAO

Anyway , i was hoping that we could talk about a beter/longer 1st gear ratio .
I have bought a Hamster Racing Club rs250 gearbox but i fear that it may be waterlogged and NLA with the tsunami in Japan .

If you want to compare notes on 300 kit we can talk . Start a new thread .

Rolling Eyes You boys eh, little tykes.
I did remember the thread about your super-300, I just got bored and never read all of it.
I thought you were just willy waving in this thread.
I liked my 300. It really did wheelie in 3rd, on the power, in a heavy summer rain shower. Mind you, it was Stephen's old 300 kit, that he had tuned himself.
It was just as quick as his F3 with RS barrels on that day at Llandow.
