MC16 HRC chambers

Wed Apr 07, 2010 10:46 am » Post: #1 » Download Post

I have recently acquired a set of HRC GP style exhaust for my MC16. As I was fitting them up last night I noticed a couple of issues. It appears that the right hand passenger peg mount is directly in the path of the upper silencer. Also because the front cylinder chamber runs directly under the rear suspension linkage, I think I will need to cut some of the lower fairing out of the way. Another snag is that the rear cylinder header pipe interferes with the radiator. I think that one is easily fixed as the lower rad support only needs to come out a little to clear it.
Can anyone confirm that I need to remove the footpeg mount ? Maybe I am missing something here but they did not come with instructions (who needs those anyways). Thanks. Jeff

HRC never intended you to carry a passenger with their pipes fitted... they are for racing!

MC16 HRC pipes fit perfectly with HRC rearsets and an HRC rear shock! They also clear HRC bodywork! Wink

Thanks Andy. I will perform the required "adjustment". I will also keep an eye out for the aforementioned parts. Smile

Best of luck! It took me years to collect all the MC16 kit... there's not much of it about!

I've only personally ever seen one set of HRC bodywork for sale, which I bought, and the last MC16 HRC transmission I saw was $1500! Shocked Glad I pounced on mine when I did!! Smile

I guess I lucked in on the pipes. I found them within my first 5 minutes on Japan Auction Center. (Thanks RobH ). I don't expect to find everything I would like to have but one can always try. Any leads would also be much appreciated. Cheers. Jeff.

StephenRC45 and I raped Yahoo! Japan several years ago! It nearly all came from there, but at prices that would make you cry these days! We reckon Steve's FIII cost less than many "fixer-uppers" people fork out for! It's almost criminal! Laughing

Apart from the transmission, the trickest part I reckon I have is the top fairing and airbox. The indicators are replaced with little HRC air scoops, and then tubes channel cool air to the airbox... best part is it looks almost as new!! Very Happy

Any pics of the HRC exhaust or Andy's tricked out '16 would be enjoyed by me and probably others. Wink

The MC16 HRC pipes are lovely, aren't they! I just love the way they snake around each other. The MC16 HRC stuff certainly seems to be in far better condition than the later stuff you see... maybe because the MC18's and MC21's were around a lot longer, and the parts are more interchangeable? Confused

What's amazing is that according to the book, the MC16 F-III (in "standard" bolted together format - i.e. before specific tuning) is rated at 68hp! That must have been some machine in 1987 when you think about what its competition was! Very Happy

The only parts I'm missing from the HRC parts book for mine are the wheels. I saw a set once, bolted on to a full F-III MC16, but at the time my agent was reluctant to buy and strip a complete bike for me. He was doing just that by the end though, and I missed a fantastic opportunity there. They're the only set of 1987 HRC wheels I've ever seen. Sad

Once built up it will be a 1987 equivalent of StephenRC45's 1991. I've got most of an HRC 1989 too. I think all I'm missing there is genuine HRC bodywork! Wink

Funny, it used to be that only Steve that annoyed me.... Razz

Here I am getting light headed over a well used HRC harness and box. Bah - I got into this game WAY too late to show anyone up. Keep talking Andy, tell us about the '89 too! There's just no other place to learn about history like this so I'm going to keep bugging you. hehe

It's a shame really, cos Steve had just about all of a 1988 too at one point, so between us we could've covered all the F-III models!

The MC16 is still by far the trickest of them all in F-III form though, if not the most powerful. Saying that though, in standard HRC form, it only gives away less than 4hp to an MC21! Mine will use MC18 F-III cylinders however, which have far better porting than the MC16 HRC ones, and may give me back 1~2hp. And yes, I'm afraid I do have the MC16 HRC cylinders too... and the heads! Cool

Waldo, I'm sorry to break it to you, but the GP style pipes on your MC16 aren't HRC. I do have an old scan of an advert for them somewhere on another PC, and seem to recall they are Blue Fox chambers.

Andy, you and Steve remind me of some other friends of mine who bought up '64 Fairlane Thunderbolt race cars and 427 engine parts back in the 70s and 80s while they were cheap. Today the cars are worth mega $$$ and parts are impossible to get. I run the '64 Thunderbolt website and was lucky enough to have one for a while (and even race it), but the lucky guys are the ones that bought them for next to nothing.
