cooling system

Sat Apr 25, 2009 11:12 am » Post: #1 » Download Post

hello guys, i've been told the only way to check if the water pump is working is to open the cap of the radiator and check if the water is running through the system, okay did that and its not happening, opened up the waterpump, the impeller turns with the engine so its not the water pump, when i stuck a hose pipe in the top of the radiator and open up one of the bottom hoses of the bike turned on the water and the water runs through the entire system. yet when i rev the bike up i notice that the water level drops inside the radiator which indicates some sort of movement. can somebody tell me whether the cooling system is working properly or not?

The water flow in the radiator will happen then the thermo opens up.

Check the thermo and make sure it's operating properly.

The thermostat should begin to open somewhere in the 65 degree area and be fully open around 80 degrees with a total lift around 8 mm (of course this will very depending on model, but my guess is not by much).

Tie a piece of string to it, and suspend it in a pan or kettle of boiling water!

To be really anal about it, use a thermometer and slowly boil the water. You can then see at what temperature it begins to open, and at what temperature it is fully open.
