Building THE bulletproof NSR...

Wed Feb 25, 2009 11:26 pm » Post: #1 » Download Post

So here's the story.

I have some NSR's in boxes I have one in one piece and will buy some more in the not so distant future, also in boxes no doubt.

Think of project wet dog's early days and you ll get the idea.

Every one of them will be laid out on the floor in many many pieces and then will be rebuilt to pristine condition. (That's the ideal senario anyway)

After that time and money consuming procedure, I want to be sure I ll never have to face a an engine failure.

So what needs to be done?

My budget is about 2000 pounds for each bike.

Of course top end rebuilds will never be out of the game, but we re talking about the really expensive stuff.

What crankshaft, oil pump,RC valve prep and maintenance is in order to achieve this?

The above 3 points are in my opinion the most important for the long and easy life for an NSR, but you might think otherwise.

I m all ears. how would you do it?

When you say never, how long do you mean? 30,000 kilometers? Less? If you mean that, then your probably on track.

Start with assembly. Make sure the engine components are all in new condition, seals are all good and your work areas and parts are spotless. Build the engine to spec. Proper torque, proper procedure, use good amount of oil on all moving parts. Adjust the oil pump to spec, use good quality oil, set jetting to spec, use good air filter, replace on a regular basis. Use high quality gear oil, etc., etc.

When you go for a ride, let the bike warm up, don't start it and wring it's neck.

That should get you a good high mileage bike without doing bottom ends till 30,000 kilometers.

Oh, don't try to do top speed long straight runs against R1's Wink

30k maybe too much with 5 or 6 bikes in the garage and a car for daily driving.

I don't think I ll ever reach that number on any of the bikes.

I was thinking about getting new oil pumps for each one of them, if available.
Do you think that's overkill?

Crankshafts rebuild and trued by someone "respectable"..

RC's set up properly, clean and optimize regularly.

But what about the ever elusive Reg/rec problem? Is there a fire and forget kind of solution? I dont want to be changing them over and over again..

All other tips are already part of the daily routine for years now.

Another one you forgot to mention is no coast downs especially for long times and from high rpm (for any new guys reading this).

...and no straights around here so don't worry about the odd high speed seizure Twisted Evil

There's nothing wrong with the English... it's better than many of the native speakers here! It's the "I want to be sure I ll never have to face a an engine failure" part I'm laughing at!

And we had some sun only the other day I'll have you know! Admittedly, it was only about 11 degrees, but after the snow and sub-zero temps for the last month it felt quite spring-like! Laughing

Build it like Honda did, and run it according to their requirements.

Well Andy I don't.

I am an NSR owner since 2005 and since then I ve never had a "proper" one.

Always something was about to go wrong (and sure enough, many times it did).

I was always left with a far less than perfect bike. So I never got to enjoy it.

Putting these days behind me now, I must assemble a reliable bike (bikes to be exact)

So Yes engine failure is unacceptable for me. Once I get it on the road I want 100% reliability, this is the only way to enjoy a bike, for me any way.

Dave my intetntion is to stick to the way Honda didi it, but what does it take to do something like this?

When you rebuild a bike which was sitting on the side of the road for some years, you can't tell how far you have to go, as far as replacing parts is concerned.

Like I said in a previous post, what do you do?

Do you clean your oilpump, prep it and off you go?
Do you rebuild it?
Do you buy a new one?

(Just an example)

So it isn't as simple as it seems initially....

p.s. Andy you must create a rule for extra poser points for those who have the complete NSR lineup.... Smile
