HRC bits & J04J needle?

Mon Nov 17, 2008 11:38 pm » Post: #1 » Download Post

Hey All,

I'm building a hybrid using a triple ns400 engine and I have used nsr250 carbs, I got hold of a jet kit (not sure if hrc or jha) but of course it only has two needle holders and 2 each of the needles so i'm on the scrounge for an hrc needle holder and 1 each of J2BA, J2BB & J2BC needles? Anyone got a spares lying around?

Also my jet kit came with J04J needles (adjustable) anyone know what these are?

Thanks for your help.
Jared

NS500CR

In fairness to Bloodnut, the NS400R engine slots into and RGV or Aprilia RS25 nicely and is a nightmare to squeeze into an NSR. I did try when I built my NS500CR.

Nice to see you are still going with it, long term project that.

I had much trouble getting a good set up using one and half jet kit on my RS500V3. Couldn't get rid of bad part throttle richness around 4,500 to 6,500rpm (this is far more annoying than you would suspect or it would be on a 250 as you end up in that zone for much more of the time due to the extra power and torque and are pulling out of a lot of corners (on the roads at least) like this).
The kit emulsion tubes are longer holding the main jet lower in the carb bowl (though you have to use the ns bowls) and the adjustable needles couldn't compensate enough. Having set up two other ns's with the nsr250 carbs using the ns400 emulsion tubes (and needles) and gotten much better initial results I would recomend that as a starting point. For my own bike (note not using CR cylinders) I ended up re-fitting the ns emulsion tubes and using the adjustable needles (B) though I have also gotten the main air solenoids of the nsr carbs working off the Suzuki/aprilia SAPC (suzuki TPS grafted on end of honda carb bank). The latter being worthy of note due to the rev, throttle position and engine speed related opening of the solenoids (via honda 'X' peices) thus leaning out at low to mid revs etc but not elswhere.
The latter is really an extension of my use of the Suzuki/Aprilia SAPC for ignition that I posted about on the ns400 forum ages ago and I should have updated that.........sorry.
There is a load of very good information on the main site here regarding what the various x peices do etc and the jet kit etc (think it's wrong about the operation of the power jets though as these are not solenoid controled with the appropriate passageway bleeding into the emulsion tube not the power jet passage). The carbs you have were designed to work alongside solenoids so you do have a ready made option to use them (though evidently they can also work without).
Allens (nottinghamshire UK) should also be doing custom needles now.
Hope that helps because if it does it will save you a load of time.

Nice to see you lurking Dave! Always an extremely well informed source for the less common questions! Smile

As for the powerjet section, yes I admit that needs changing. The basic information was written about 10 years ago when the workings of the NSR were largely unknown, and although now known not to be accurate, it's largely irrelevant for NSR owners as the information and advice covering fitting and setup of the HRC jet kits for the 250's has been comprehensively documented and verified. It's only unusual cases such as this that brings it back to my attention, and I will try and get around to changing it in the near future. I will also see if I can add the information and photos you supplied me for the NS/NSR carb conversion at the same time.

Can you check again? Definitely J04? J06 would be 88~89 F3 AVGAS needles.

You'll probably be much better off with 1992 SS/SP J2b needles, or maybe even stock MC21 needles.

That is a smashing looking bike you're building their Bloodnut.I have always fancied building something similar myself. Those pipes look really nice, have you made those yourself?
What sort of power can you expect to get out of a well sorted 400 or 500?

i'll check the number on those needles.

We are projecting 90-95 at the tyre from 393cc, but with plenty of scope to go out in size once we are happy with the reliability of the transmission after the mods we have made.

The most important thing is the power delivery which should be wide and very progressive especially as shes a BIG Bang design.

Cheers
Jared
