Sickly NSR MC18 - where to start?

Thu Jan 27, 2005 6:00 pm » Post: #1 » Download Post

Hi.

It's been a good while since I posted anything here. The site looks very active, superb ! Smile

OK, I'm after some advice on my MC 18 which lies dormant in my garage following an "episode" at Mallory Park in 2004.

The engine started "bogging down" and losing power, and eventially the rear wheel locked up and the bike hasn't run since. I assume this is a "seize" caused by lack of lubrication - do the symtoms sound right?
Sad

I did manage to start it a few weeks afterwards but it wouldn't idle and the engine wouldn't rev out or run smoothly at all.

I gave up, depsondant at two-stroke reliability and used my Ducati for the remainder of the season.
Confused

After trying to sell the bike, with no luck, I've finally decided to give it a last chance and am seriously thinking about a re-build.

The problem is I have no idea where to start or how to even go about diagnosing what's wrong.
Embarassed

Can anyone advise what the possible worst case scenarios could be - top end re-build / re-bore? - bottom end re-build / crank bearings? How to go about determining which. At this point any advice on how to diagnose the problem would be helpful.

Cheers

Sluf (Herts, UK,) MC18

Hello stranger! :)

Sorry to hear the MC18 is sick... let's see if we can give you some pointers.

First thing first, pull the plugs out and drop the expansion chambers off. Inspection through either the plug holes or exhaust ports, or even looking at a plug itself could indicate if it's the top-end or the bottom-end that's died. If you managed to start the motor, but it wouldn't idle, it would suggest a bottom-end problem.

I seem to remember you blanked the power jets, but it's a long time ago that we discussed it, so refresh my memory please. I'd pull the carbs off anyway, and check for a blocked jet, just in case.

There, that'll keep you going for an hour!

Andy.
