Base Gaskets

Thu Feb 07, 2008 11:46 pm » Post: #1 » Download Post

Does anyone know if there is an off the shelf gasket that is the same as the base gaskets for an MC21? The guy I ordered my parts from said they are on back order, but I have heard that some parts are interchangeable with other Hondas?

In another post there is a linked page that says CR125 base gaskets are the same... You just need to trim off the part that seals off where the power valve arm is. Doesn't say a yaer, but, not much had been changed on those engines from 1990 on up to at least 99-00(well at least the casting #'s on the Cyl's was the same)
I have both NSR base gaskets and CR125 base gaskets out in the garage. I will check to verify this and maybe post a pic if it does infact work out. I believe I have many of those CR gaskets and you are more than welcome to a set if they are the same.

NF4 - RS125

NF5 - RS250

Both those gaskets fit.

Although, correct me if I am wrong, but don't both the NF4 and NF5 use KV3 (i.e. NSR250) base gaskets for 0.5mm?

RS250 .5mm gasket is KV3, RS125 .5mm is an NF4.

I had to wait ages for my base gaskets too, for some reason they are getting trickey to get , got the rings , clips & head gaskets within days.
I was impressed today as I picked up a carb seal kit for my MC18 and was on order for only a week. ( please note a carb seal kit is only for ONE carb ! ) Embarassed
It might be a good idea to order a spare set of base gaskets next time you're in the shop.

Just a word of caution to anyone considering it... DON'T think you can get away with making base gaskets from 0.5mm gasket paper.

The compression of proprietary gasket paper can be significantly different to that of the high quality OEM Honda gaskets and consequently effect compression ratios which could (worse case scenario) lead to increased possibility of detonation.

Ok, I didn't have any CR base gaskets left, all my full kits were robbed of them. But, good for us NSR people, I still have a CR cylinder. So, here we are, this is for sure, a 1990 CR125 jug.... And, the NSR gasket fits near perfect.... Except it lacks the part where the power valve arm is. So there you have it.

Did some other research and the CR gasket was the same part # from 90 to 97.

Interesting note by Andy there.

I've often used over the counter gasket paper to make gaskets, but you do always have to take the crush into account. And generally the thicker the paper the greater the crush factor.
