MC28 Stem Question

Sun Jul 29, 2007 2:41 am » Post: #1 » Download Post

Can anyone tell me if the stem on an MC28 and an MC21 are the same? I did a search but could not find anything. I also checked the part numbers on the parts manual but they are different. Any help would be appreciated.

You mean the forkstem? No, there is a hole in the headtube that the '28 steering lock goes into.

I believe you can use either stem in either model though (as they are the same length and diameter), but as Fontyyy says, the steering lock may not work.

Thanks Andy. That is what I needed to know. I was just looking for the specs on the stem as I am in need of a spare to press onto NC35 clamps for an USD fork conversion. I can get my hands on an MC21 stem but had no luck on the 28. The steering lock is not an issue.

21 and 28 stems are identical apart from the cutout for the lock on the 28.

You won't find a part number for it as it's welded into the lower triple clamp and will need the weld cutting off before pressing out.

The best way to do this is to not turn off the weld, but to cut it down to a 30mm OD, and then press out the shaft. This way you get to keep an extra 5mm or so of stem for welding into the NC35 clamp.
