Perhaps the way to look at it would be that it was fine before you looked at it, and it'll only cost you an extra hundred quid for a new piston and rings, since the barrel's gotta be welded up anyway! Wink

This was a major discussion between Steve and myself over several cups of tea.

Pul and engine apart and see that the bridge has cracked. Oooer, better not use that....but who knows how long it's been like that? And it might well have been running fine like that for ages.

However, it's probably only a matter of time before the plating picks up and ruins the engine.

It can kill the cylinder, plating ripping off can kill the crank bearings as well as necessitating a full stripdown. And I'd guess in extreme case crank bearings (especially those of you who are running the wrong ones??) locking up and spinning could kill the cases.

Andy, how close to totally shot were Monkey's cases??

If you can feel any part of it sticking up I wouldn't run it, if not I'd probably take a chance

Monkeys cases were pretty bad, the bearings had been fretting inside there for sure. Still the bearings were nice and cheap lol and he only needed a whole new crank and all the cases repaired.

I'm not sure I understand this... If you relieve the bridge (by grinding) don't you in effect take off the plating? Wouldn't that be bad for wear in that area?

Yes you reduce the amount of plating in that area. The fact now the piston doesnt touch that part and the ring is less compressed means there is less wear there also, all round this is good.

personally id bin it. a guy i know had he's rs lock solid coming down paddock hill at brands. it turned out that a repared bridge had failed. it resulted in a broken back.

maybe the risk of this is very small, i wouldnt take it tho
