magnesium wheels

I've gotten mixed answers each time I ask this question. Hope someone here knows for sure. Can you powdercoat magnesium wheels? Or... Should they be painted? Thanks in advance.

I asked the same question when I had my Honda RS250 and I was told that you need to take them to a specialist like Dymag. Apparently they strip the old wheel and use a special coating before painting over. This coating will prevent oxidation between the magnesium and the paint. I noticed some of this oxidation on my wheels (looks like bubbling of paint).

So in summary, the feeling I got was to avoid powdercoating for magnesium but at least go to a specialist for any repainting and ask about what they do to prep the wheels.

Don't know how scientific this is but I powder coated Marchesini Mags back in the '90s and ran them over a four year period on two different bikes. I sold them and the new owner ran them for at least two more years before I lost touch with him.

No problems.

I took my Magteks for powder coat and had no problems. though you must have them blasted with a fine grit and explain to the guys there what they are..ie magnesium therefore soft.

dont whatever you do have them dipped in anything!!!

Have a search, there's a proper horror story about that somewhere on here and one less pair of Magteks in the world than there should be.
