gas tank storage

Sat Oct 16, 2004 12:56 pm » Post: #1 » Download Post

I'm going to be taking off my current MC21 tank and storing it as a spare. What is the recommended way to store a tank and avoid rust? I swapped over the stock gas cap to the new tank, so I'm wondering if I need to get another cap so the spare tank can be closed up. Or can I just clean it our with contact cleaner, let it dry, wrap it in plastic, and call it day?
Thanks for any info.

Generally, I would seal up the fuel tap hole, and pour in engine oil. Give it a good swirl round and then seal up the tank with the oil in it. Every now and then give it a swirl to recoat the sides.

Come re-use time, flush it through with fuel.

Wouldn't there still be small traces of oil and do damage to the carb? I guess if it's a two stroke it would be ok. :?

I was going to say wash it with diesel fuel being a detergent but that would probably do damage.

It won't damage the carb, especially when you consider how tiny the concentration would be after a fuel wash out.

Pre-mix is the same thing! Rolling Eyes
