Did I fry something?

Thu Jul 06, 2006 5:27 am » Post: #1 » Download Post

I was adjusting the RC valves on my 21 and forgot to plug the tps back when I fired it up. it idled fine until I gave it some gas then it died.
I have not been able to get it back up. It has no spark on both coils.
I tried different plugs and a different pgm box.

the kill switch seems to be acting differently, the bike usually has the oil light on, but for some reason it is now off. with the kill switch off the headlights are still on. Is that normal?

any suggestions what else I can swap?

My first thought is that you may have over tightened the cables, put too much strain on the motor, and fried the PGM.

Personally, I'd remove the seat unit, and the cover for the PGM and check for any black marks or obvious heat damage on the coating.

I've fixed a couple of PGMIII's recently with busted RC servo control. Sweet. It's a bit of a task and takes a steady hand, three cups of tea and a lot of swearing, but it's done.

Many thanks to my mate Malcolm who rustled up the bits to do it and showed me the way.

Matt will you be offering exchanges on the PGM3 units anytime soon?

The repaired units went on our bikes as I'd rather not offer them to anyone at this stage just to be on the safe side Wink

Might be able to offer the components to do the repair if they prove to be reliable.

The components replaced were the exact parts, not cross referenced components, so they should be ok provided that there wasn't something else that set them off.

I had two PGMIII's with blown capacitors, so I took one out of one PGM and soldered it into the other PGM and it ran for a few seconds and everythiong worked until it all went POP in a puff of smoke and both PGM's went into the "Hmmm....I'll take a look at that later" drawer.

got the bike back from the shop. he replaced the entire wire harness and it seems to work again. Now I'm kind of scared to adjust the rc valves.
anything I should know besides to leave plenty of cable slack?

Have you checked them for carbon build up? Make sure you can easily rotate them by hand. If not, it's time to remove and clean them.

Just 'cos you can rotate them frrly doesn't automatically mean that they're good to go. Pull off the pipes and check to see that you're actually getting maximum opening.

The carbon can build up behind the valve and stop them from fully opening, but they may still feel free to move.
