MC21 'ROTHMAN'S' Replica wheel colour ?

Wed Apr 26, 2006 7:09 pm » Post: #1 » Download Post

O.K then peeps what's the general consensus on wheel colours for a 'Rothman's' Replica then ?

Ive seen 'Monkeys' with the white wheels ( not as per the factory but a bit less tacky)

And 'Micks' has the original gold colour ( as a rule cant stand gold wheel's but that is what colour they were from the factory and I do have to say it does compliment the rest of the paint scheme)

so what do the mass'es have to say then Question

I guess it depends on how original the bike is. If the bike is 100% perfect show bike I would go with gold. If the bike is modified with FG bodywork, I would go with white.

White is correct for a '21 or '28 Rothmans, Monkey's is a real SP (unlike Mick's) and would almost certainly have been a Rothmans (it's the right age), his Magteks used to be white pre their orange Repsol job, all original white Magteks (like mine) came from Rothmans bikes (or have been bought seperately).
The Cabin and Pentax 21's were gold as were the Rothman's '18's

And white would be nicer if it's a real SP, if it's a rep GP bike then gold, in my humble opinion.

Laughing both are correct as per Being a race rep. doohans early nsr had gold and the later ones white as shown below, but being biased i think gold wheels are the dogs but only on a rothmans rep.

the other thing is that the honda rothmans rep is no where near the real thing, just take a look at the logo on the side of an origonal honda fairing.

Thanks for pointing that out Fontyy, perhaps I should have been more specific Embarassed (I did'nt realise the road going models had the 'white wheels' )

My point was to try and replicate how a 'Rothmans' MC21 would have left the factory in 1990/91, as ive mentioned above I thought that they had gold wheels but clearly not eh Wink

Well the poll seems to favour the white and to try and keep it original I guess they are going to have to be white then .

Oh and Mick I agree on the gold they do look a little naff but they do compliment the rest of the paint scheme very well .

Thanks for all the replies Etienne (BOSOZOKU)

This (click for a big pic linked from Jamie's site)

is how a Rothmans '21sp would have looked, there were no normal Rothmans NSR's, they're all (only 1500 ever) SP's and were made in 1992 only.

Mick's is very close to a GP look but nothing like an SP, horses for courses really, a fake 21sp is easy to do, suspension, dry clutch, Magteks and an SP paintjob.

Why build a fake? Surely better to have the real thing or build something different or more like the bike the SP was copying???

A fake will always be just that..a fake as it wont have correct frame numbers etc to fetch the premium a classic bike in the future would. I reckon if your going to build a rothmans bike that is not a genuine SP then surely its better to make it look more like the real thing? ie gold wheels, bigger rothmans stickers (like Micks), if your bike is original then keep it that way as it will be worth more money in the future...then again, how many original SP are their left still with original fairing, exhausts, airboxes etc?

Thats my thought anyway, and like Fontyyy said "Horses for courses" really!!

Thats a fair comment, my bike was a standard R when i bought it painted as it is.

So far I've added tyga pipes, sp engine ( a bargain i couldnt refuse) hrc jet kit and tyga reeds to go in.

I'm looking for an sp shock and wouldnt turn down an sp, rs or usd front end at the right money either. So slowly I'm building an SP but it'll never be a real one but t will be just as good. And I dont care about resale value because it's going to stay with me forever hopefully.

But if I had got a real SP I'd only do engine mods and keep the bodywork standard as has been said

Why build a fake eh! how many MC21 SP's in rothmans colours do you see I dont think ive ever seen one in the flesh Shocked

As for the frame numbers from what I can gather it's not that simple to track back what the actual bike left the factory as anyway, not that I would pass it off as anything else as I do not intend on selling it ( or is it ? if so can somebody enlighten me then ? )

The other thing which I am not 100% certain about now is whether to build a 'factory replica' or a 'GP replica' Embarassed . I guess it will never be a full SP copy as I had wanted to leave the standard wet clutch on ( cant stand the noise of the jingly dry jobbie) and I also wanted to put some after market pipes so I guess ive contradicted myself allready .

Anyway thanks for the imput as it has given me something else to think about now.

BOSOZOKU.

You have a source for these numbers? Production ran for years so it's not going to be a simple matter of numbers between 000000 and 010000 are r's, 010001 to 015000 are se's and 015001 to 016500 are sp's.

More to the point had I bought the blue topped SP forks from Graeme France (he offered them to me) and some genuine Rothmans '28sp bodywork back from Red Baron in Bangkok (there was some there) and put it all (including my original white Magteks) on my '28se would anyone be able to prove it wasn't a Rothmans sp? (It's the right year). How about if someone pulled the same trick before it was imported?

And wiith sp forks, adjustable rear shock, L barrels and heads, magteks and real oe Honda sp bodywork wouldn't it be an sp anyway?
Which bit makes it a real sp? All the wheels/'28 forks and bodywork all started out on sp's and are unique to them so if you've got them do you have an sp?
If not, how about this, if an sp frame cracks and gets replaced with an r one is the bike still an sp?

You see? It's just a spec and bikes are just bits bolted togeather, if the bits are the right bits then the bike is an sp.

If you had to replace the frame the bike would still be an SP, but worth less money. But if the bike is well used the price may not be effected as much as a collector grade bike would be.

Aren't the SEs the same as the SP except for the wheels?

For the 21 yes apart from barrels, for the 28, the same as before and the forks are different also...

But how would you know????
Is Monkey's SP "real"?, i.e. did that bike leave Honda as an MC21sp?
Is it the original frame? Is it a box of bits from Hong Kong?
Can anyone tell?
etc.
