My MC28SP came with a Maxton rear shock fitted, as well as the SP item all wrapped up in as new condition. Anyone know if the Maxton item should be superior to the SP one.
The spring on the Maxton shock is purple, and the SP one is red! Probably useless information but there you go.
I don't need 2 shocks so may try and sell one of them as I'm skint . Just thought I'd check to see which should be better first.

erm..... right.....Colin not really no, I have a SP unit that has been rebuilt by K-tech and I would say it performs no better than the Maxton unit on my CBR but I havent really spent as much time on track with the SP unit.
personally the reason I would rather have the Maxton Unit is I am a poser and I like the purple spring.

Thanks Monkey - In my defence I did say I had no idea. Just assumed they would be different due to different swingarms. Notice no baiting re. which swinger is better - after my battering due to my less than kind critique of a certain MotoGP rider, I'm lying low for a bit .

RE. Which one to keep...I'm trying to contact Maxton for some advice on their shock which is currently fitted. It would be nice to try both out but I am not sure about how to swap them over and I only have a rear paddock stand. Presumably the bike will drop like a sack of spuds when shock is removed. Will search this site for advice on changing shock, then might swap 'em over so I can make a comparison.
Well I have searched and can't find any info regarding changing the rear shock. Can anyone offer advice/instruction/torque settings re. removal (and refitting) the rear shock on the MC28SP. Might sound a bit stupid if you are an experienced mechanic (as quite a few NSR people seem to be), but unfortunately I am not.
The thread seems to have gone a little off track, but let me get this....you have a std SP rear shock and a Maxton rear shock and you want to know which one to keep?
Is the Maxton shock a re-worked SP unit or is it been built by Maxton? In both cases I would have assumed that the Maxton unit is going to be better that the SP unit, otherwise they wouldn't really be doing their job.
I had a re-valved Maxton shock on my MC18 about 10 years ago and it was great......though to be fair the original shock was about as much use as the springs in my Ikea sofa.
So sell the SP unit and bask in the knowledge that you've a trick little springer to show your mates down the pub.....even if it's purple!
I was able to change my rear shock by myself. One thing I should mention, the engine was out. I would think you would be able to change with 2 people, one holding the rear up while the other does the rest. The torque specs are in the parts manual under notes.
Getting back to the first ?, if someone spent the money & time to change the rear shock it must be a better unit than the stock. But then again, maybe the last owner was a poser.
