In the par for the course 600 group test in MCN this week, the latest R6 that they raved about made 105bhp and 42lb.ft. of torque... That's only 30ish bhp and under 8 lb.ft more than my NSR...

I know they're missiles but when you look at it like that, and having twice the capacity, it's one of the main reasons behind me thinking bore-strokes are such a waste of space!

I mean, 2006, fly-by-wire, slipper clutched up 600 vs. 1990 mish-mash 300cc NSR... and only a few ponies more.

I know, but wasn't that what that PB article was all about when they built the 300cc Aprilia? They wanted to see if it could beat a R6 round the track. Well it couldn't so they said that you shouldn't bother with the 300 kit........whoops! Looks like that Tyga kit sitting in a box under the bed wasn't such a good idea

When I was Uni we toyed with a pair of CR500 barrels with a view to making a V-Twin 1000. The crank was the main problem but imagine what that would've been like. Make a 999 Duke look like a a small dwarf bunny...

Anyone got a parts book for an NSR500V? Be interesting to get some prices for barrels/crank etc... We could club together and build an engine, stick it an RS250 chassis and have an NSR pool bike for trackdays!

Maxim,do you remember us talking about those Swissauto engines?Well i e mailed Swissauto and they were out of stock but would assemble one for me for £11500,Andy didnt think that was a bad price as some people were spending near to that on NS400/500 conversions,So if we want to run a pool lets get a Swissauto 500cc, V4, 210bhp engine and sling it in an NSR

Over the years I've seen a couple of the Harris or ROC 500s come up for sale. Usually go for around 15K. Bet spares are a bitch to find.

Any how I think a sorted RS250 is all you'd need 90+bhp will get me from A to B quick enough. sh*t I can scare myself on my old moped and that can't have more than 10bhp.

Before you say it ..I know that we onky build em cos we can so I'm up for the 500/1000 two-stroke project........who's money we spendin?

Better make it yours Tom... You could sell 15 of your bikes and fund it!

Nah, you don't need power to go quickly, you need skills, Leighton Walker puts his 60bhp VJ23 at the sharp end of the MRO Powerbike Supersport 400 class against some seriously more powerful opposition and runs it on a pace that wouldn't be at the back of the powerbikes, and they're real powerbikes, MRO, the quick guys, one step below BSB, he'd win an NG powerbike race on his RGV*

Unless you're really really on the pace it's all about the rider, there's less than 10% difference between a decent 400 club racer and Ryuichi Kiyonari on a full factory 'blade with slicks - theres only about half that between the same 250/400 rider and the superstocks, let alone a flippin 600. Let's be honest here if we're getting passed on 250's (let alone 300's ) by people on road bikes it's all our own fault.

* this is a fact, best LW/RGV Cadwell lap 1:39.535 at 78.485 mph, winner at Cadwell of NG powerbike class (Damien Fricker, Yamaha R1) best lap 1:39.64 at 78.40mph.

The lower pale green trace is the '23 in question, 60.12 bhp, the top trace is Colin Skillicorn's with fancy Mark Dent heads.

And 60bhp, 70bhp or whatever, the point is he's still running a pace that would be no disgrace on a race prepped R1

At Cadwell last year for the 400 day Bill Limb was the fastest guy in fast by a decent amount, lapping most of us, myself and monkey included and still running several seconds a lap slower than the fast MRO boys.

Surely it's a difficult to compare a 2 stroke to a diesel regardless of age.

The NSR has a bang every stroke of the piston so it will look good on paper giving ~70bhp from a tuned 300 against 105bhp from a 600 (though a similarly tuned 600 is a lot more than 105bhp). Also remember the emmisions on your 300cc NSR probably exceed that of small country, whereas the R6 is working on less than a flatulent mouse .

Also it has to be said that the R6 (like any modern diesel) will rev like feck till you get bored, unlike an NSR unfortunately (though I do not speak from first hand experience...yet...touch wood).

As I understand it, Leightons bike is fettled by Stu Jones.
Given that Stu reckons -
