Experimenting with Starting Technique

Mon Aug 27, 2018 3:07 am » Post: #1 » Download Post

I was musing through the pages recently and noticed the topic discussing how hard an NSR250 can be to start if its been sitting for a while. My NSR250 MC21 gets ridden about once every six weeks if it's lucky and sometimes I swear I spend more time kicking it than riding it. Last weekend it came out for a run (gearbox oil change time) so I decided to try a different technique in starting. I used to just kick madly away until it eventually started. This often involved fairly short kicks on the lever. This time I took a similar approach I use with many of my other two stroke kick start only bikes. That is slowly kicking up right cylinder to top then a full swing on the starter. It started in about a third of the time and number of attempts as it used to. And my right leg condition today supports that!! May or may not work for others so thought I'd share it.

I still want to buy a rolling road starter though..........................
