MC28 left pipe smokes more than the right

Fri Oct 14, 2016 8:13 pm » Post: #1 » Download Post

So i started the bike for the first time in 3 or 4 months the other day (i keep it in the house) i noticed straight away that the left pipe (gear kick side) was smoking twice as much as the right pipe. i left it warm up and took her for a spin for 20 mins. when i got back there was minimal difference in the pipes but the left was still smoking a small bit more. I seen a thread up like this a while ago for a MC21. people were saying it could be gearbox fluid but obviously with this being a 28 we dont have that problem. im thinking a crank seal could be on the way out? any help appreciated

Hi there
First off, If the gear shift or nearside pipe is smoking more than the offside it certainly wont be gearbox oil contaminating it,and the rules for 21 and 28 motors on gear oil sucking in through the offside crankseal are the same for both engines, it would smoke from the offside pipe if this was your issue and when it does you can smell the fumes are much stronger and thicker than the normal 2 stroke fumes, and the smoke certainly wouldnt improve after a spanking for 20 mins it gets worse,
When cold does the bike start easily and run on both cylinders straight away ? if so I would be surprised if your crankseals are faulty,
Good luck in your quest,
jonmac

Yeah I didn't start the bike for 4 months and it started on the 4th or 5th kick. started on both cylinders instantly. its kept in the spare room so it doesn't get cold at all. maybe it was just from sitting for so long. thanks for the reply.

Most NSRs tend to smoke more from one pipe on initial start-up.

As John says, if it started up easily and idled smoothly on both cylinders (and then cleared up noticeably once warm), it's unlikely you have anything to worry about.

However, regarding your comment "people were saying it could be gearbox fluid but obviously with this being a 28 we dont have that problem"... trust me, an MC28 does have 'gearbox fluid' (transmission oil), and is just as likely to suffer as any other model IF the RHS crank seal was to fail! Wink
