High EGT temps

Tue Feb 12, 2013 9:22 pm » Post: #16 » Download Post

I did a recent trackday and experienced an interesting issue.

At times the EGT was reading up to 1350 deg, but it didn't actually feel lean. The temp rise linear - in that is would keep rising as the throttle setting and RPM increased. I decided to ride another session and just didn't rev it out so far.

I am pulling the head off tonight to have a look, but I do not expect to see any damage.

The question is - is inserting the Koso EGT probe so that the tip is in the middle of the pipe actually too far? The reason that I ask is that a friend tried this setup on his GP bike several years ago and the probe over read temp and also dropped 6hp. Removed the probes and the 6hp reappeared..

thanks
Simon

What fuel are you using ? If the straights were short enough so that it was a brief temperature spike then you are lucky . If you carry on riding like that then it could lead to detonation / seizing etc .

I never did a test to see if I lost power by inserting the probe but I have not noticed anything from test afterwards comparing newer mods .

Oh, I am using 98ULP as it is a roadbike. It didnt feel lean, and I am usually reasonably able to jet okay with all the years that I raced the RS125. I was keeping an eye on the temp all the time and if if was getting up there, I just eased off the load.

Jet up and aim for 1000 with ULP with a long straight . If it climbs slowly on any throttle position it shows that it is lean .
Oil up not seize up !
